If you remember, one of my very first patterns last year, was this Sweetheart Dishcloth. I still use mine all the time! I love love LOVE crochet dishcloths. That’s why, when coming up with something I could make for our teachers for Valentine’s Day, this idea came to me. These sweetheart candy dishcloths are cute and useful! They can be used as a washcloth, dishcloth, or for wiping down the chalkboard, whiteboard, or desks in the classroom.

I simply adapted the original pattern to suit this design! The full pattern is available for you here, for free, OR you can buy the printable PDF, ad-free copy from my Ravelry shop.

Row 12: ch 1 and turn, 2 hdc in first st, hdc in next 20 sts, 2 hdc in last st; 24 sts
Row 13-14: ch 1 and turn, hdc in each st across; 24 sts
Row 15: ch 1 and turn, sk first st, hdc in next 10 sts, leave the rest unworked for now; 10 sts
Row 16: ch 1 and turn, sk first st, hdc in next 9 sts; 9 sts
Row 17: ch 1 and turn, sk first st, hdc in next 8 sts; 8 sts
Row 18: ch 1 and turn, sk first st, hdc in next 7 sts; 7 sts
Row 19: ch 1 and turn, sk first st, hdc in next 6 sts; 6 sts
Row 20: ch 1 and turn, sk first st, hdc in next 5 sts; 5 sts
Row 21: ch 1 and turn, sk first st, sc in next st, hdc in next 2 sts, sc in last st; 4 sts
Do not turn. Loosely sl st about 8 down the inside of that hump, toward the center. Then pick up with the unworkd sts on the other side.
We are sort of repeating rows 15-21 of the first hump, but in a slightly different way, so as to remain consistent and uniform across.

Row 15: hdc in next 11 sts (first 2 sts are center of the heart, and will be left unworked for next row) sk the next st, and hdc in last st; 12 sts
Row 16: ch 1 and turn, hdc in next 8 sts, sk next st, hdc in next st, leave last 2 sts unworked; 9 sts
Row 17: ch 1 and turn, hdc in next 7 sts, sk next st, hdc in last st; 8 sts
Row 18: ch 1 and turn, hdc in next 6 sts, sk next st, hdc in last st; 7 sts
Row 19: ch 1 and turn, hdc in next 5 sts, sk next st, hdc in last st; 6 sts
Row 20: ch 1 and turn, hdc in next 4 sts, sk next st, hdc in last st; 5 sts
Row 21: ch 1 and turn, sc in next st, hdc in next 2 sts, sk next st, sc in last st; 4 sts
Do not fasten off. Turn work. Loosely sl st across the top of last hump, and down the side back toward the center. This is for uniformity’s sake because of the sl sts down the other side. Then, picking up at the unworked center sts, begin working hdc sts all the way around the heart. Work them closely together, approximately 90 hdc all the way around the heart. In the bottom point, (hdc, ch 1, hdc) to maintain the point of the heart.

1. After sl stitching down the side, pick back up with hdc in the unworked sts to make the next hump.

2. After completing the second hump, turn and sl st down the inside, toward the center again, to make it uniform with the other side.

3. This will now be your RIGHT side. After sl stitching down to the center, begin with hdc in the 2 unworked center sts, and continue with hdc all the way around the heart.

4. In the bottom point of the heart, (hdc, ch 1, hdc) together to maintain the point.

5. There should be approximately 90 sts around the outside of the heart. You may need to block to keep it flat, but it should lie flat with some gentle coaxing from your hands.

X

Make 2
In contrasting color, make your Xs and Os.
For the X, you can just make the two lines and then sew them together, crisscrossed. I liked connecting mine in the middle as I made them. Follow the pictures below to see how I did that.
Ch 9
turn and sc in 2nd ch from hook, and each remaining ch; 8 sts
Fasten off.
Ch 4
ch the 5th ch THROUGH the center of your previous line AND your current ch, ch 4 more on opposite side of the line. So you should have a ch 9 that is attached at the center, to the first line of the X.
turn, sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next 2 chs, sc into the next center st of the first line, sc through the next ch AND through the center of the first line, sc in last 3 remaining chs; 8 sts
Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing. Weave in the shorter ends, and then use your long tail to sew onto your heart.

6. When making the second line of your X, ch 4, and then ch the 5th THROUGH the center of your first line.

7. Yarn over and pull through the st AND the ch on your hook, for your 5th ch.

8. Once your ch is attached in the center, continue on, chaining 4 more.

9. sc in the 2nd ch from hook, and next 2 chs, then sc into the next st on the FIRST line of the X.

10. Then, sc into the other side of the FIRST line. Then sc into the last 3 chs.

11. Now just sew your X onto your heart!

O

Make 2
ch 12, join to beginning ch to form the O
(inc, sc in next ch)6x around ch, join with sl st to first st; 18 sts
Fasten off, leaving long tail for sewing. Weave in the short end. Use long tail to sew onto the heart.

12. Connect your ring, and sc around, as instructed above.

13. Sew onto your heart!

  1. Crochet is probably one of the hardest things to do in terms of creativity. You need to allot a bunch of time and patience for this one that’s why I am not encouraging everyone to try it if they are not going to finish it in the first place! On the other hand, I want to thank Sweerheart dishcloth for being generous and patient because they explained everything that I need to know about this matter. I know that I am not really creative, but I want to try crochet making so I could challenge myself too.
