It has been nearly SIX years since I first shared the pattern that has inspired this No-Sew Baby Doll design! Back in 2017, my youngest babies were only 2 and 5, and they loved, loved, loved, the Bernat Baby Doll. It was already a pretty quick make, but now…ooooo…now it is for sure a speedy, market making item! Aside from stitching on the eyes and nose, I have eliminated ALL sewing!

Horray!

Terms and abbreviations to know:

magic ring

rnd, rnds – round, rounds

st, sts – stitch, stitches

sc – single crochet

hdc – half double crochet

inc – work 2 sts together into the same st

invsc2tog – invisible single crochet 2 together, this is essentially a decrease, but done in such a way as to make the continuous stitching smoother, and the decrease not as noticeable.

  1. Insert hook into front loop only of next stitch, DO NOT yarn over.
  2. Insert hook into front loop of second st.
  3. Yarn over. Pull through 2 loops.
  4. Yarn over and pull through last 2 loops.

Notes:

The NO-Sew Baby Doll is worked in continuous rnds from the bottom, up, with no joining unless specified in specific rnds. The arms are made separately first, to be added as you crochet the body. Gauge is not important, however, be sure that your sts are tight enough so that stuffing will stay in the doll. Plush yarns can be tricky to work with, so here are some tips: to be sure you’re not missing any sts, always count each rnd, until you’re more comfortable. Because the yarn is so thick, the sts will be very close together, especially during the increasing rnds. Do NOT pull yarn too tightly while sewing or closing, because it can break. Pull gently.

Arms, begin with color B (Almond), make 2 and set aside

Begin with magic ring.

Rnd 1: 6 sc in magic ring; 6 sts

Rnd 2: (inc, sc in next st)3x; 9 sts

Rnd 3: sc in each st around; 9 sts

To complete the last st of rnd 3, leaving 2 loops of color B on the hook, add color A to hook and pull through. Fasten off B. Continue with A.

Rnd 4: (invsc2tog, sc in next st)3x; 6 sts

Rnd 5: sc in each st around; 6 sts

Do NOT stuff arms. It will cause them to stick straight out of the sides.

Pinch closed and ch 1, sc 3 across to close off the arm, working your sts through two sts at a time with the arm held closed.

Fasten off, and set aside. No need for a long tail, because you will be crocheting these right into the body in the next step!

Body, beginning in A

Begin with magic ring.

Rnd 1: 6 sc in magic ring; 6 sts

Rnd 2: inc in each st around; 12 sts

Rnd 3: inc in each st around; 24 sts

Rnds 4-8: sc in each st around; 24 sts

Rnd 9: (invsc2tog, sc in next 2 sts)6x; 18 sts

Rnd 10: sc in each st around; 18 sts

Rnd 11: (invsc2tog, sc in next st)6x; 12 sts

Attaching the arms next rnd.

Rnd 12: sc in next 2 sts, line the first arm up to the side and sc through the sts on the arm AND the sts on rnd 11 in next 3 sts, sc in next 3 sts, line the second up and sc through the sts on the arm AND the next 3 sts on rnd 11, sc in the last st; 12 sts

To complete last st of rnd 12, pull through color B (skin color). Fasten off A. Continue with B. Stuff the body before moving on to the head.

Rnd 13: inc in each st around; 24 sts

Rnd 14: (inc, sc in next 3 sts)6x; 30 sts

Rnds 15-17: sc in each st around; 30 sts

Pull color C through to complete the last st of rnd 17, but do NOT fasten off color B.

For rnd 18, there’s a special technique for making the top of the st a different color than the bottom of the st. This will make for a better transition into the baby’s hat. Begin with color C on the hook, but have color B ready to pick up.

Rnd 18: with C on the hook, (insert hook into next st, yarn over with B and pull B through the st *there should be 1 C loop and 1 B loop on your hook now*, yarn over with C and pull C through both loops)30x; 30 sts

Continue with C, but do NOT fasten off B. You will use that a bit later to close the head, before working the hat the rest of the way up. For now, continue with C for the brim of the hat.

Rnd 19: in C, FLO this rnd, hdc in each st around; 30 sts

Fasten off C.

Stop here to sew on the nose and eyes. Use an 8 inch piece of the Almond to sew on the nose, by sewing over 2-3 sts in the center of the face, at rnd 16.

Use 2 8-inch pieces of black worsted weight yarn for the eyes. The eyes cover over rnd 17, and are each the span of 3 sts, with 2 sts between them.

Closing the head.

Pick up B again and use the unworked back loops of rnd 18, behind the hdc sts, for the next rnd.

Rnd 20: BLO opposite the used front loops *the invisible dec here can still be done, just with using the back loops instead of the front – (invsc2tog, sc in next 3 sts)6x; 24 sts

Rnd 21: (invsc2tog, sc in next 2 sts)6x; 18 sts

Finish stuffing.

Rnd 22: (invsc2tog, sc in next st)6x; 12 sts

Rnd 21: (invsc2tog, sc in next st)4x; 8 sts

Fasten off, and weave tail around the sts to close.

Hat in A

Attach A to the first st of rnd 19, attaching to the brim of the hat.

Rnd 1: sc in same sts as joining, sc in each st around; 30 sts

Rnd 2: sc in each st around; 30 sts

Rnd 3: (invsc2tog, sc in next 3 sts)6x; 24 sts

Rnd 4: sc in each st around; 24 sts

Rnd 5: (invsc2tog, sc in next 2 sts; )6x; 18 sts

Rnd 6: sc in each st around; 18 sts

Rnd 7: (invsc2tog, sc in next 4 sts)3x; 15 sts

Rnd 8: sc in each st around; 15 sts

Rnd 9: (invsc2tog, sc in next 3 sts)3x; 12 sts

Rnd 10: sc in each st around; 12 sts

Rnd 11: (invsc2tog, sc in next 2 sts)3x; 9 sts

Rnd 12: sc in each st around; 9 sts

Rnd 13: (invsc2tog, sc in next st)3x; 6 sts

Pull color C through to complete the last st of rnd 13. Fasten off color A, leaving a long tail to sew the hat down, and continue with C for the pom at the end of the hat.

Rnd 14: inc in each st around; 12 sts

Rnds 15-16: sc in each st around; 12 sts

Rnd 17: 6 invsc2tog; 6 sts

Fasten off off and weave in all ends, but the last one of color A.

Fold the hat over to the side, and using the end tail of color A, sew rnd 13 down to rnd 1, and weave in ends.
