Happy Read Across America Day!! I am so excited to finally be sharing with you the puppets I have been working on for months! This year I picked Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll. And the Alice Hand Puppet herself, is first in line. In order to prevent copying the now famous, Disney version of Alice in Wonderland, I wanted to stay as true to the book as possible. Sir John Tenniel, the original illustrator, first created the color illustrations with Alice in a yellow dress! I never knew that until recently!
If you are just joining us, and would like to take a look at the full supply list for the whole crochet-a-long, you can find that HERE.
If you’re interested in a printer-friendly PDF of the Alice Hand Puppet Pattern, you can find the design in my Ravelry or Etsy shops! If you’d like to wait, once all the puppets in this collection are released, they will all be available in an ebook to purchase! If you prefer to use the free blog copy below, I still appreciate you being here! And another great way to support my blog is simply by sharing! Thank you for supporting my business!

Notes:
The body of the Alice Hand Puppet is worked from the top down, in the rnd, with no joining. The arms, hair, and apron are made separately and sewn on. The eyes and nose are sewn on. She is designed based on the original illustrations in the book by Lewis Carroll, illustrated by Sir John Tenniel. Pages 2-6 are printer-friendly, with just the written pattern. Pages 7-10 contain process pictures to better help with the steps.
Size: This is one size, fitting child through adult, but if you wish to make it smaller for a smaller child to play with, simply tighten the gauge or go down a hook size.
Gauge: 7 sts across and 7 rnds down = approximately 2 inches

Fasten off C, leaving a long tail for sewing. Weave in all ends but your last tail. Using the long tail, sew onto the head across the bangs first. (See picture series below for sewing details) Line the ends of the headband up so that they are even, ending just below each eye. Sew across the bangs. Then sew down the side of the hair to the side of the face so that the hair is over the arm. As you reach the bottom of the face, push the needle through to the back, and loosely sew the hair down to the back of the head just above the dress, with the last 11 sts of the hair hanging loosely below. Then push the needle through to the other side of her face sewing the other strand down over the other arm, and meeting back to the side of the headband where you began. Knot and weave in the tail.

Work across the top of the apron: sl st in 11 sts across the top, ch 14, turn work so that this new sleeve will now be to your right, and sl st to join to the side of the apron just above row 8; 11 sts, 14 chs
Row 17: now with the right side of the apron facing you, sk the first ch of the sleeve, sl st in the next 7 chs, hdc in next ch, 2 dc in each of the next 3 chs, hdc in next ch, sl st in last ch; 16 sts
Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing. Create the apron pocket and embellishments first. Note that the sewing on of the apron is completely optional. You can slip it on the front through the arms, and tie the bow (made below) loosely in the back.
Apron Pocket in D
Ch 4
Row 1: turn and sc in 2nd ch from hook, inc, sc in last ch; 4 sts
Row 2: ch 1 and turn, sc in each st across; 4 sts
Fasten off D, and attach E for the trim of the top of the pocket.
Row 3: in E, sl st loosely across the top of the pocket; 4 sts
You can leave the top of the pocket open if you’d like. But it doesn’t need to be functional, and I don’t like weaving in ends, so I tucked all my ends into the pocket and sewed it in white all the way around, on the bottom right hand side of the apron. Weave in ends.
Apron Embellishment in E
*optional! You can leave the whole apron white if you prefer.
Surface sl st around the bottom half of the apron.
Insert your hook into the ch between rows 1 and 2. Pull color E through so that your working yarn is behind the apron. Now work your hook into the apron pulling the yarn through the apron AND the yarn on the hook for the surface sl st. Do this across the bottom, up the side to row 8 where the sleeves attach, across row 8, and down the other side to where you began. Fasten off and weave in ends.
Apron Ties in E, (make 2, one on each side)
Attach yarn with a sl st to the side at row 8, ch 35, fasten off and weave in ends. With apron on, loosely tie in the back so that it’s not too tight to still pull over a hand. I sewed the sleeves around where the arms were sewn to the body, and sewed the top of the apron across the chest, but left the rest loose.
