There are so many ways in which we can learn about love through the movie Trolls, but I am going to try to stay focused on one particularly fantastical lesson of love that couldn’t have escaped anyone who watched; loving the unlovable.
If you’ve seen the movie, or even just read the last two messages in this series, it’s clear that Poppy is a very kind and loving character. But what stood out most in this film, was her ability to look her enemy in the face and be filled with compassion.
We see it the first time she sees Bridget, the Bergen scullery maid who is put in charge of the captured trolls for the feast. Almost immediately we see a perplexed look of empathy as she realizes that Bridget has feelings, and she is hurting.
The Trolls were facing real persecution, real torment, real tragedy at the hands of these Bergens, yet Poppy steps outside of herself, her own emotions and fears, to show her enemies what it means to love.
Wow! Would you be able to do that? Yes, I know…this is a fictional children’s movie about weird creatures that don’t exist, but the message that this sends our children is quite powerful, don’t you think? In the face of real danger and darkness, you can be the light that can guide even the darkest of souls. With the hope and faith which comes from the Lord, and fellowship and love, you can be a light that drives out the darkness!
The love that Poppy shows to Bridget helps destroy a powerful darkness that had been over all of Bergen Town!
Be the troll. Be the light showing love in what seem like unlovable moments. Love the unlovable. I am reminded of the children’s song, “This Little Light of Mine,” simple yet powerful and filled with Biblical truth!
