Puffy Stuffy OR Pocket Pal Unicorn Keychain
This Puffy Stuffy Unicorn pattern was originally shared on The Hook Nook Life blog! It is a style I have worked with for years, using Bernat Blanket Yarn for a quick and easy, super squeezy, plush! I buy all my Bernat Blanket yarn at JoAnn’s! They have the best selection of colors, perfect for all kinds of plushies! Pro tip: Bernat Blanket, Bernat Baby, and Bernat Brights are all interchangeable in any pattern!
Also JoAnn’s has, hands down, the best coupon policy. Did you know that they take competitor coupons? You can sign up to receive their e-mails, texts, mailers, AND sign up for the app, and use ALL of the coupons in the same purchase (unless otherwise stated, but I do this a lot).
Seriously, if you haven’t already, you should definitely sign up for their app, to stay up to date on all their coupons and sales!
Anyway, what I discovered with this fun pattern, is that I can use the exact same pattern concept from the puffy stuffy, with worsted or dk weight yarn, and a 2.25mm hook, and turn it into a pocket pal keychain! This can be done with any of my Puffy Stuffy patterns, and it is really easy! All you need are the right tools. Below I will share the original pattern, created with Bernat Blanket Yarn, and I will share affiliate links to all the tools you could possibly need, as well as instructions for pocket pal modification!
If you’re interested in a printer-friendly PDF of the Puffy Stuffy Unicorn pattern, you can find the design in my Ravelry or Etsy shops! If you prefer to use the free blog copy below, I still appreciate you being here! And another great way to support my business is simply by sharing! Thank you for supporting my business!
Notes: This pattern is worked in a round from the top, down, with no joining. Use a st marker to mark each rnd. The body, arms, and legs are made all in one piece. The ears, horn, and mane are made separately and sewn on. The blanket yarn can be tricky to work with, so here are some tips: to be sure you’re not missing any sts, always count each rnd, until you’re more comfortable. Because the yarn is so thick, the sts will be very close together, especially during the increasing rnds. Do NOT pull yarn too tightly while sewing or closing, because it can break. Pull gently.
**This pattern also contains tips along the way for making it into the pocket pal size for keychains.

Unicorn Puffy Stuffy Pattern
Body
in White
Begin with magic ring.
Rnd 1: 6 sc in magic ring; 6 sts
Rnd 2: inc in each st around; 12 sts
Rnd 3: inc in each st around; 24 sts
Rnd 4: (inc in next st, sc in next 3 sts)6x; 30 sts
Rnd 5-11: sc in each st around; 30
The dc bobbles will be worked with color changes. You must end your last st before each bobble, by pulling color (B) through to begin the bobble sts.
Rnd 12: (dc bobble cc, sc in next 14 sts)2x; 30 sts See picture below for dc bobble cc sequence, and step by step instruction is written above in the special stitches, for the color changes.
Rnd 13-14: sc in each st around; 30 sts
Rnd 15: sc in next 3 sts, dc bobble cc, sc in next 8 sts, dc bobble cc, sc in next 17 sts; 30 sts
Before you continue on to close, sew your eyes in place between rnds 7 and 8.
The sewn eyes for the puffy stuffy unicorn span about 4 sts, with 2 sts between them, covering the span of 1 rnd. Knot and fasten off all pieces inside the body. *If making the pocket pal you can sew the eyes OR use the safety eyes. Placement for the safety eyes is the same row, but about 4 or 5 stitches in between them.**You might even want to stop here, and make the snout (below). It is slightly easier to sew on before stuffing!
*** For pocket pal/keychain only
Before stuffing, place the screw of your rivets inside the unicorn, and push it through the stitches approximately 3 rows from center, so that there is room for the horn. You can even make the horn and sew that on first, for reference. Dab some fabric glue into the top of the screw on the top of the head, and quickly screw the top of our rivet onto the screw. The glue will help it to stay screwed on during use.
Begin stuffing. Body will stretch as you stuff, so stuff a little more after each rnd here before closing.
Rnd 16: (invsc2tog, sc in next 3 sts)6x; 24 sts
Rnd 17: invsc2tog 6x; 12 sts
Rnd 18: invsc2tog 6x; 6 sts
Complete stuffing, if you can put anymore through the middle.
Fasten off and weave the end around the hole to close. Your HOOK NOOK ends weaver is the perfect tool for pulling those final ends through your puffy stuffy!

Row 4: ch 1 and turn, dec, sc in next 3 sts, dec; 5 sts
Fasten off, leaving long tail for sewing. Sew onto the center of the body, between the arms. You can gently stuff to puff out, or sew flat with the top around rnd 8 or 9 and the bottom around rnd 14.

Row 9: turn and inc in 2nd ch from hook, inc in next 9 chs, sc in next 6 sts; 26 sts
You should have a total of 5 ringlets for the mane of your puffy stuffy unicorn. Fasten off leaving a very long tail for sewing. Sew the mane onto the head with the shortest ringlet to the front/side of the horn, and the others all turning toward the back. The style depends upon how you sew it on! You can have the ringlets dangle, or, like pictured, sew them in flower like curls.
Ears in White, make 2
*Note, the left ear (your right with unicorn facing you) is ONE rnd shorter to account for the extra lift of the hair.
Begin with magic ring.
Rnd 1: 4 sc in magic ring; 4 sts
Rnd 2: (inc, sc in next st)2x; 6 sts
Rnd 3: (inc, sc in next 2 sts)2x; 8 sts
Stop here and fasten off for the left ear. Leave long tail for sewing.
Rnd 4: (inc, sc in next 3 sts)2x; 10 sts
Fasten off, and leave long tail for sewing.
Sew the taller ear to the side without the hair, next to the horn. Sew the shorter ear on top of the hair, on the other side of the horn.
For some finishing touches to your puffy stuffy unicorn or pocket pal, add a little blush to the cheeks and inner ears. If you have been making the keychain ption, attach your key ring and lobster clasp, and your Pocket Pal Unicorn Keychain is now ready for use!
