The Puffy Stuffy Bunny pattern was originally published in 2017. I have updated the pattern to make it NO-SEW, and include a fun Easter egg costume for the bunny! I hope you like it!
I am using yarn that has sadly been discontinued due to the closure of JoAnn’s. If you’re one of those (like me) who stocked up on Big Twist yarns before they shut down, then you might have it on hand! If you do not however, the pattern will work with any super bulky (6) yarn, and variations with different size yarn and hooks are listed below.

Materials:

Needed for the bunny – approximately 85 yds of super bulky (6) yarn of your choice

Needed for the egg – approximately 50 yds of super bulky (6) yarn of your choice

***For the bunny pictured, I used Big Twist Sprinkled Icing – Pastel Babygirl, and Big Twist Flourish – Ski Lodge Pastels Stripe for the egg. These yarns have been discontinued due to the closure of JoAnn’s, but you can use any super bulky (6) Yarn for this pattern!

I have also used Bernat Baby Blanket Frosting – Golden Hour OR Bernat Blanket – Vintage White for the bunny, and have found that Bernat Baby Blanket – Pitter Patter would make a nice pastel egg choice!

Worsted Weight black acrylic yarn for the eyes – 1 yd

Worsted Weight pink yarn for the nose – 1 yd

OR Flat Back Round Kawaii eyes and hot glue gun (sizes depends on your preference!)

Crochet hook, K-6.5mm

Polyester Fiberfill

Yarn needle

Scissors

Stitch Marker

Variations:

Big Twist Posh OR Premier Parfait Chunky with G hook.

Worsted Weight 4 yarn with F hook.

DK weight yarn with 2.25mm hook

*Note: The smallest size makes a great keychain size, using these fun attachments below. Place the screw up from the inside of the head before closing up, and glue the rivet onto the screw to secure. If making the keychain size bunny, make it without the egg, OR attach the egg to the bunny via glue or by sewing.

Notes:

The Puffy Stuffy Bunny is an older pattern (©2017)  that has been updated to be NO-SEW, and include additional optional materials, as well as how it can be adjusted to make in different sizes, with different yarns and hooks. AND a bonus pattern for an Easter egg outfit! It is worked in the round from the top, down, with no joining. The use of a st marker to mark each rnd is helpful when working with thicker yarns. The ears are made first, and attached to the body as you make it in one piece. This yarn can be tricky to work with, so here are some tips: to be sure you’re not missing any sts, always count each rnd, until you’re more comfortable. Because the yarn is so thick, the sts will be very close together, especially during the increasing rnds. Do NOT pull yarn too tightly while sewing or closing, because it can break. Pull gently.

Puffy Stuffy Bunny

Beginning with the ears – make 2 and set aside

Begin with magic ring.

Rnd 1: 6 sc in magic ring; 6 sts

Rnd 2: (inc, sc in next st) 3x; 9 sts

Rnd 3: sc in each st around; 9 sts

Rnd 4: (inc, sc in next 2 st) 3x; 12 sts

Rnds 5-13: sc in each st around; 12 sts

Fold closed and sc through both side to close up, 6 sts across. You do not need a long tail for sewing.

Body

Begin with magic ring.

Rnd 1: 6 sc in magic ring; 6 sts

Rnd 2: inc in each st around; 12 sts

Rnd 3: inc in each st around; 24 sts

Rnd 4: (inc, sc in next 3 sts)6x; 30 sts

In the next rnd you will be attaching the ears by folding them over, and crochet through the two folded sts on the ear AND rnd 4.

Rnd 5: fold the edge of the first ear and hold it against rnd 4 with the open side facing left, and the ear pointing at you, (sc through two sts on the ear WITH the next st of rnd 4)3x, sc in next 13 sts, fold the edge of the second ear and hold it against the next 3 sts of rnd 4 with the open side facing right and the ear pointing toward you, repeat ( to )3x, sc in next 11 sts; 30 sts

Rnds 6-11: sc in each st around; 30 sts

Rnd 12: sc in next 5 sts, dc bobble, sc in next 9 sts, dc bobble, sc in next 14 sts; 30 sts

Rnd 13: sc in each st around; 30 sts

Rnd 14: sc in next 25 sts, popcorn st in FLO of next st, sc in next 4 sts; 30 sts

Rnd 15: sc in next 4 sts, dc bobble, sc in next 12 sts, dc bobble, sc in next 12 sts; 30 sts

Stop here to sew on the nose and the eyes. The bottom of the nose is under rnd 11, centered between the two dc bobbles. With your pink yarn and tapestry needle, make a triangle over a stitch of rnd 11, about 4 stitches from either dc bobble. Sew and fill in the triangle with pink yarn by sewing over top of the stitch repeatedly. Knot inside the body.

Eyes

Eyes are stitched over rnd 9 just above and to either side of the nose. Use your black yarn and tapestry needle.

  1. Insert needle below a st of rnd 9 just above and inside the dc bobble.
  2. Push needle back out 3 sts over, just above and to the side of the nose.
  3. Insert needle BACK into the same beginning entry.
  4. Push needle back out ABOVE rnd 9, and UNDER the black yarn that is now crossing over top of those 3 sts.
  5. Pull both strands to tighten yarn, and then insert hook under the black yarn, wrapping it around itself twice to hold that arch in place.
  6. Insert needle above rnd 8 and to the side to create the first lash, dropping the yarn inside the body.
  7. Pull your beginning strand through the eye of your needle and create the second (lower) lash by wrapping the yarn around itself again like in step 5.
  8. Insert needle to the side of the eye above rnd 9, below the first lash, and drop yarn inside the body.
  9. Knot the yarn tightly inside the body a few times, and repeat on the other side for the other eye.

Rnd 17: invsc2tog 12x; 12 sts

Rnd 18: invsc2tog 6x; 6 sts

Fasten off yarn, and weave final end through each of the last sts, pulling to close all the way. Weave in end.

Egg Bottom

Rnd 1: 6 sc in magic ring; 6 sts

Rnd 2: inc in each st around; 12 sts

Rnd 5: (inc, sc in next 4 sts)6x; 36 sts

Rnd 6: sc in each st around; 36 sts

Rnd 7: (inc, sc in next 5 sts)6x; 42 sts

Rnds 8-10: sc in each st around; 42 sts

Sl st into first st of rnd 10 before beginning rnd 11.

Rnd 11: ch 1 and begin in the same st as joining sl st,  [(hdc, dc, ch 1) tog in next st, (dc, hdc) tog in next st, sk next 2 sts, sl st in next st, sk next st]7x; 7 points of the egg

Rnd 6: (inc, sc in next 3 sts)6x; 30 sts

Rnd 7: (ch 7, sk next 4 sts, sc in next 11 sts)2x; counting the chains this creates 36 sts

Rnd 8: (sc in each of the 7 chs, sc in next 11 sts)2x; 36 sts

Sl st into first st of rnd 8 before beginning rnd 9.

Rnd 9: ch 1 and begin in the same st as joining sl st, [(hdc, dc, ch 1) tog in next st, (dc, hdc) tog in next st, sk next 2 sts, sl st in next st, sk next st]6x; 6 points of the egg

Fasten off and weave in ends.

  1. Thanks for this cute free pattern! Love it! Any suggestions on attaching ears, etc. as I don’t think I am very good at it! (Usually the reason I don’t make little critters, dolls, etc.!)
Blessings for your Good Friday and Easter Sunday!

    • Hi Helen! Thank you for your comment!
I attach them pretty simply. I pin them in place, and put the needle first through a st on the head, in line with where I want the ear to be placed. Then I go through the st at the end of the ear, and back into the head. And repeat that ear to head, ear to head, across until the top of the ear is secured. Then, to get it to stay on the sides, I sew underneath the ear too, from the underside of the ear, to the body, and so on and so forth, all the way down to the bottom leg. It’s hard to put into words, and maybe my photos aren’t too clear, but there are a few photos with captions at the end of the pattern, to describe this process. I hope this is helpful!
