Puffy Stuffy Chick

I am so excited to share with you my latest pattern obsession, Puffy Stuffies! I love these guys so much! I have made some for my own family over the years, but decided the patterns needed to be written. They are so, incredibly soft! Made with Bernat Blanket yarn, I’m almost certain this is what a cloud feels like! The soft stitches provide such a great texture for little ones, and they are a wonderful fun size for play, cuddle, and travel!

The first of the Puffy Stuffies I want to share is this sweet little chick, of course! Or, as my youngest fondly calls my prototype, “Mine Chick-a-dee-dee-dee!” And it can be made up super quick for Easter! You could probably make a dozen! It is the easiest of all my patterns, and I will be sharing lots of pictures to help you navigate through this yarn. It is not as hard as you might think!

Materials:

Bernat Baby Blanket Yarn, Buttercup
Small amounts of worsted weight yarn in black for eyes and orange for beak.
Hook size, K – 6.5mm
Polyester Fiberfill for stuffing

Terms and abbreviations to know:

Magic ring
rnd, rnds – round, rounds
st, sts – stitch, stitches
sc – single crochet
inc – increase, work 2 sts into 1 sts
FLO – front loop only
dec – decrease, sc 2 sts together to make 1 sts
invsc2tog – invisible single crochet 2 together,
this is essentially a decrease, but done in such a way as to make the continuous stitching smoother, and the decrease not as noticeable.
  1. Insert hook into front loop only of next stitch, DO NOT yarn over.
  2. Insert hook into front loop of second stitch.
  3. Yarn over. Pull through 2 loops.
  4. Yarn over and pull through last loop.

Notes: This pattern is worked in a round from the top, down, with no joining. Use a st marker to mark each rnd. The body and wings are made all in one piece. This yarn can be tricky to work with, so here are some tips: to be sure you’re not missing any sts, always count each rnd, until you’re more comfortable. Because the yarn is so thick, the sts will be very close together, especially during the increasing rnds. Do NOT pull yarn too tightly while sewing or closing, because it can break. Pull gently. This pattern is available for free on my blog here, but if you wish to download a PDF copy of the puffy stuffy chick, and avoid the ads, it can be found in my Ravelry store for a small fee.

Puffy Stuffy Chick

Body:
Begin with magic ring.
Rnd 1: 6 sc in magic ring; 6 sts
Rnd 2: inc in each st around; 12 sts
Rnd 3: inc in each st around; 24 sts
Rnd 4: (inc, sc in next 3 sts) 6x; 30 sts

This is to show you what it should look like working through your st. You will see 2 fuzzy loops that are a little hard to make out, but that’s your st!

This is what it should look like after rnd 3. During the increases, the sts will be very close together, so be sure to use a st marker and count your rnds.

You almost can’t even see the next st, after increasing, but it’s there, just under my thumb, so be careful not to skip any sts.

There’s that almost hidden st!
Rnd 5-11: sc in each st around; 30 sts
Rnd 12: (FLO, 4 dc in next st, both loops, sc in next 14 sts) 2x; 38 sts

Working through the FLO for the wing in rnd 12.

4 dc in 1 FL to make the wing. Then work sc in next st.
Rnd 13: (sc in the unworked back loop under the wing, sc in next 14 sts) 2x; 30 sts

Work into the unworked back loop, underneath the wing.

After the unworked back loop, continue sc as normal, into the next sc st. Skip all the dc, so wing stays open. p.s. How much do you love that chocolate bunny stitch marker from HarperBabyshop? Click the image to check out her Etsy page!
Rnd 14-15: sc in each st around; 30 sts
Before continuing on to close, hand st the beak and eyes onto the face.

To create your beak, pull orange yarn through between rnds 12 and 13, centered between the wings. Then to create the triangle, go up rnds, and over 1 sts, and come out 1 sts to the other side of initial entry.

Continue around those places of entry to create your triangle, and then fill it in.

To fill in the beak, continue going across the top, from top to the bottom of the beak, until all filled in with orange.

Here is the beak, all filled in. Knot the orange off inside the body.

To begin the eyes, pull black yarn through between rnds 7 and 8, 2 sts over from the wing.

Insert black yarn back through, 3 sts over, so that it aligns with that side of the top of beak.

Don’t pull the black yarn too tightly. Bring needle back through 1 rnd below, pulling through the black yarn as well to hold the eye lid in place.

Insert needle down 1 rnd below where it was pulled through for first lash, and bring it back 1 st over, again through the black of the eyelid.

Do the same thing for the last 2 lashes; down 1 rnd, back up through the eyelid.

After the last lash, insert the needle back through 2 sts over to make the other eye.
Begin stuffing, as you close.
Rnd 16: (invsc2tog, sc in next 3 sts) 6x; 24 sts
Rnd 17: invsc2tog 12x; 12sts
Rnd 18: invsc2tog 6x; 6 sts
Complete stuffing, if you can put anymore through the middle.
Fasten off and weave the ends around the hole to close.
