Today is #grannysquareday2020, hosted by Simply Crochet Magazine on Instagram! When I first heard about this special day, I didn’t think there was any way I could truly participate. I’m a toy maker afterall! But then, as I was photographing this Unicorn Lovey Puppet, all spread out in it’s lovey blanket glory, I realized this is a granny square! All of my lovey puppets are essentially granny squares. One could, if so inclined, actually create a large lovey puppet, granny square blanket, with many different animals! Mind. Blown.
So today I will proudly share my granny square love with this Unicorn Lovey Puppet FREE pattern! Because granny squares and unicorns, I believe, are equally magical. There’s just so much they are capable of, right?!
If you’re interested in a printer-friendly PDF of the unicorn lovey puppet pattern, you can find the design in my Ravelry or Etsy shops! If you prefer to use the free blog copy below, I still appreciate you being here! And another great way to support my business is simply by sharing! Thank you for supporting my business!
Notes: This pattern is worked from the head down through the blanket in one piece, with the arms, snout, hair, and horn sewn on separately. The head is worked up in sc, in continuous rnds, with no joining. The blanket portion is worked up in dc, with joining. Chs do not count as sts. Gauge is provided for both sections, and is only important if you desire the finished blanket dimensions provided below. It is designed to be both a lovey and a puppet for little ones to play and snuggle with! There is no stuffing, so they are easily washed. Pages 2-5 are your printer-friendly pages with just the written pattern. Page 6 has all process pictures.
Gauge for head: 7 sts and 7 rnds = 2 inches

Sl st into the first st of rnd, and fasten off. Weave in ends.
Arms, Make 2

Rnd 1: 6 sc in magic ring; 6 sts
Rnd 2: (inc, sc in next st)3x; 9 sts

*Pull color A through to finish last sl st of rnd 3, and fasten off color B. Continue the rest of the arm in A.
Rnd 4: work this rnd behind the sl sts, into rnd 2, sc in each st around; 9 sts
Rnds 5-9: sc in each st around; 9 sts
Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing. Weave in all ends, but your last tail. Sew into the ch 3 sps to each side of the head, as the finger holes for the puppet.
Snout, in A
Begin with a magic ring.
Rnd 1: 6 sc in magic ring; 6 sts
Rnd 2: inc in each st around; 12 sts
Rnd 3: sc in each st around; 12 sts
Rnd 4: (inc, sc in next 3 sts)3x; 15 sts
Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing. Using the black yarn, sew the nostrils over rnd 2 of the snout on opposite sides, and knot off in the back. Do not stuff. Sew the snout to the lower center of the face, a bit oblong, below rnd 8 of the head.
Eyes in black
The eyes are placed at about between rnds 6 and 7 of the head, above the snout, with approximately 2 sts between them. They cover about 3 sts. Wrapping the yarn around itself is a great way to keep it in place. Please see THIS VIDEO to see how I create the eyes!
Horn, in D

Rnd 1: 4 sc in magic ring; 4 sts
Rnd 2: sc in each st around; 4 sts

Ears, Make 2
Ch 5
Work rnd around the ch.
Rnd 1: sl st in 3rd ch from hook, sc in next ch, 4 hdc in last ch, turn to work on the other side of the ch, sc in next ch, sl st in next ch and fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing. Sew the ears on the top sides of the head, around rnds 3-5.
Hair, in C
Ch 13
Row 1: beginning in the 2nd ch from the hook, 3 sc in each ch across; 36 sts
Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing.
This is one long ringlet, stretched out over the forehead, in front of the horn and ears. Follow pictures below to show how it is sewn onto the head. It will be flattened down for sewing. (I accidentally attached the hair before the ears, during the design process. No worries! You can do it either way!)

Just look at those squares! I’m not saying you they should be made into a whole blanket, but I’m also not, NOT saying they should be made into a blanket. 😉
