No worries about being late here! The White Rabbit Hand Puppet pattern is next in our Read Across America Crochet-a-Long. As we explore the characters of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, the White Rabbit is easily one of the most intriguing. Is there anything so remarkable?
“There was nothing so very remarkable in that; nor did Alice think it so very much out of the way to hear the Rabbit say to itself, ‘Oh dear! Oh dear! I shall be too late!’ (when she thought it over afterwards, it occurred to her that she ought to have wondered at this, but at the time it all seemed quite natural); but, when the Rabbit actually took a watch out of its waistcoat pocket, and looked at it, and then hurried on, Alice started to her feet, for it flashed across her mind that she had never before seen a rabbit with either a waistcoat-pocket, or a watch to take out of it…”
So, of course, I had to include the dear White Rabbit’s pocketwatch in the pattern, as it seems vitally important!

Notes:
The body of the White Rabbit Hand Puppet is worked from the top down beginning with the head, in the rnd, with no joining. The arms, ears, snout, waistcoat, and pocketwatch are made separately and sewn on. The eyes and nose are sewn on. Pages 2-6 are printer-friendly, with just the written pattern. Pages 7-10 contain process pictures to better help with the steps.
Size: This is one size, fitting child through adult, but if you wish to make it smaller for a smaller child to play with, simply tighten the gauge or go down a hook size.
Gauge: 7 sts across and 7 rnds down = approximately 2 inches

Fasten off and leave a long tail for sewing. Before sewing, use Baby Pink yarn to create the nose, by sewing a triangle to the center rnd of the snout, pointing downward. Then fill it in, sewing the pink over and over.
Knot off behind the snout. With black yarn, sew a single line from the bottom point of the nose, down to the sl st in the last rnd of the snout.
Knot behind the snout. Sew the snout onto the front center of the face with the top point of the snout at rnd 9, and the bottom of the snout along rnd 15, right at the edge of the first yellow rnd. Knot off and weave in ends.
Eyes, in black
Use about 8 inches of black yarn for each eye. Sew the eyes over rnd 8, about 1 st to either side of the top of the snout, covering the span of about 4 sts, with about 3 sts between them. Knot and weave in the ends inside the puppet.

Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing. Pull the chains over each arm, and sew the waistcoat around the last row of the arms, pinning the points at the top of the coat down, pointing outward as well. I only sewed the top point folded out on each side, and around the arms, and let the rest of the coat fall where it may. Cut another 6-8 inch strand of Cherry Red to sew around the other arm. Weave in ends.
Vest Buttons in Black, make 2

Do NOT fasten off. Continue to connect to the clock face.
Rnd 4: turn work so that the wrong side is facing you. Place the clock face on top with the right side facing, and, holding the sts of rnd 3 together, crab st through both all the way around joining the front and back panels of the watch, join to the first st with sl st; 18 sts
Ch 25 for the watch ch and fasten off leaving a long tail for sewing. Before sewing, create the clock hands below.
Clock Hands
Originally I tried to make this so that everything was yarn. I tried to create the hands of the clock by sewing black yarn, and I’m certain that it can be done, but I grew tired of the lines always looking uneven, and I wanted at least some of the numbers on the clock. Fabric paint to the rescue!
The White Rabbit’s clock always reads 12 o’clock! Use your Puffy or Slick black paint to write the 12 at the top, the 6 all the way below that, and the 3 and 9 opposite each other as well. If you find you have room, fill in the other numbers as well. I found that even though they looked like they fit, the paint smudged together as it dried, so making the main numbers bigger was the best way to go. Then make the short hour hand pointing up to the 12. Let it dry completely before adding the longer minute hand up through the 12. Let dry at least 24 hours before sewing to the rabbit’s hand. Sew the end of the chain to the waistcoat. Then sew the back of the watch down to his hand. Weave in ends.
