Every character has a story, a history, and Scrooge is no different. Before his name became synonymous with greed and miserliness, Scrooge was a young man with hopes and dreams, and even a love. The Young Scrooge Hand Puppet represents our curmudgeon at a pivitol time in his life, when money became more important than relationships.

Notes:
The body of the Young Scrooge Hand Puppet is worked from the top down, in the rnd, with no joining, unless otherwise specified. The arms, hair, nose, and chin are made separately and sewn on. The eyes and mouth are sewn on as well. Young Scrooge requires a bit of a mouth to keep him from looking grumpy.
Size: This is one size, fitting child through adult, but if you wish to make it smaller for a smaller child to play with, simply tighten the gauge or go down a hook size.
Gauge: 6 sts across and 7 rnds down = approximately 2 inches

Rnds 9-12: sc in each st around; 18 sts
Rnd 13: (invsc2tog, sc in next st)6x; 12 sts
Sl st into first st of the rnd and fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing. Weave in all the ends inside the arm, except the final tail, which we will use to sew the arm to the puppet, but first make the ruffled cuff.
Ruffled Cuff, in D (eggshell)
Turn the arm the other way so that the hand is pointing upward, and reattach color D into the unworked front loops of rnd 7, with a sl st, to begin the lower part of the sleeve.
Rnd 8a: ch 2, 3 dc in same st as joining sl st, 3 dc in each st around; 36 sts
Join with sl st to the first st of the rnd, and fasten off. Weave in the ends from the ruffle.
Use the tail at the end of the arm to sew into the arm holes with the thumbs (bobbles) inward toward the head. Weave in ends.
Chin in A (skin color) *note that Young Scrooge’s chin is a bit smaller/thinner than the older version of the puppet*
Begin with magic ring.
Rnd 1: 6 sc in magic ring; 6 sts
Rnd 2: inc in each st around; 12 sts
Rnd 3: (inc, sc in next 2 sts)4x; 16 sts

Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing. Sew the chin onto the face, with rnd 5 on rnd 15 of the face, and the remaining sts underneath on rnd 16. Weave in ends inside the puppet.
Nose, in skin color *note that Young Scrooge’s nose is 1 row shorter than the older version of the puppet*
Ch 4
Row 1: turn and sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next 2 chs; 3 sts
Row 2: ch 1 and turn, inc, sc in next st, inc; 5 sts
Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing. Sew the nose from the top of rnd 9 to rnd 11, with some shaping. Row 2 should be at rnd 11 of the face, pinched a bit. Sew down the first st of the row, and then pinch together the second and fourth sts, skipping the third st so it gives the nose a point, and then sew down the last st of row 2, and around the rest of the nose, pinching the beginning ch together a bit like the top of a triangle. Weave in ends.
Eyes, in black
Using your tapestry needle and about 8 inches of black yarn, sew the eyes over about 4 sts, above and to each side of the nose, about rnd 9. Knot and weave in ends inside the puppet.
Mouth, in black
Sew a simple smirk, turning upward to either side, just above the chin, to add a little glimmer to young Scrooge. Knot and weave in ends inside the puppet.
Hair, in E, (Brown/Cafe)
Ch 7
Row 1: sc in 2nd ch from hook and next 5 chs; 6 sts
Row 2: ch 1 and turn, inc, sc in next 4 sts, inc; 8 sts
Row 3: ch 1 and turn, inc, sc in next 6 sts, inc; 10 sts
Rows 4-12: ch 1 and turn, sc in each st across; 10 sts
Row 13: ch 1 and turn, dec, sc in next 6 sts, dec; 8 sts
Row 14: ch 1 and turn, dec, sc in next 4 sts, dec; 6 sts
Do not turn
Rnd 1: continue to work 38 sc evenly around the hair until you get back to where you started. This amounts to 13 sc down each side, and 6 sc across the bottom, and the top.
Continue working from sideburn to side burn here:
Sl st into the first st of rnd 1, ch 1 and turn, create first sideburn: sk sl st, *sc in next 2 sts, hdc in next 2 sts, dc in next st, ch 2 and turn to go back up the sideburn, dc in the first st, hdc in next 2 sts, sc in next 2 sts,* sl st back into the first st of rnd 1, and continue with bangs, sc in next st, hdc in next 2 sts, sl st in next st, sc, hdc, 2 dc in next st, hdc in next 2 sts, sc in next st, sl st in next 2 sts, and begin last sideburn: repeat * to *, and sl st into last st.
