This Bernat Baby Doll pattern might just be the pattern of all patterns. Ok, maybe not really, but it is super easy, works up very quickly, and has been the source of a great war between my youngest two children, until I had to put my prototype away for safekeeping, poor baby. I got this idea, because my 2 year old daughter began carrying around her Puffy Stuffy Chick, and pretending it was a baby. She would rock it, and sing to it, and put it to bed. This got me thinking, why couldn’t I make the easiest and softest, most cuddly baby doll ever?Bernat Baby Doll was born, and my kids have been going nuts over it! Y’all, this makes a great last minute gift or stocking stuffer! They are also easy to stock up on for craft shows!

Materials:
Bernat Blanket Yarns: at JoAnn
For pajamas Pink or Blue, or color of your choice!
For skin I used Almond for the fair skin and Mink for the darker skin, both found at JoAnn
For the brim and ball on hat, White or Vintage White
Crochet hook, K-6.5mm –> HERE is my favorite K hook!
Small amount of worsted weight black yarn for eyes
Large yarn needle
Polyester Fiberfill for stuffing
Terms and abbreviations to know:
magic ring
rnd, rnds – round, rounds
st, sts – stitch, stitches
sc – single crochet
hdc – half double crochet
inc – work 2 sts together into the same st

invsc2tog – invisible single crochet 2 together, this is essentially a decrease, but done in such a way as to make the continuous stitching smoother, and the decrease not as noticeable.

  1. Insert hook into front loop only of next stitch, DO NOT yarn over.
  2. Insert hook into front loop of second st.
  3. Yarn over. Pull through 2 loops.
  4. Yarn over and pull through last 2 loops.

Notes: The Bernat baby doll pattern is worked in continuous rnds from the bottom, up, with no joining. Arms and hat are made separately and sewn on. Gauge is not important, however, be sure that your sts are tight enough so that stuffing will say in the doll. This yarn can be tricky to work with, so here are some tips: to be sure you’re not missing any sts, always count each rnd, until you’re more comfortable. Because the yarn is so thick, the sts will be very close together, especially during the increasing rnds. Do NOT pull yarn too tightly while sewing or closing, because it can break. Pull gently.  PDF, ad-free copy of this pattern can be purchased in my Ravelry, but the pattern will remain on my site for free.

Bernat Baby Doll

Body
Begin with blue or pink, start with magic ring.
Rnd 1: 6 sc in magic ring; 6 sts
Rnd 2: inc in each st around; 12 sts
Rnd 3: inc in each st around; 24 sts
Rnds 4-8: sc in each st around; 24 sts
Rnd 9: (invsc2tog, sc in next 2 sts)6x; 18 sts
Rnd 10: sc in each st around; 18 sts
Rnd 11: (invsc2tog, sc in next st)6x; 12 sts
To complete last st of rnd 11, pull through Almond for skin color. Fasten off blue or pink.
Rnd 12: inc in each st around; 24 sts
Rnd 13: (inc, sc in next 3 sts)6x; 30 sts
Rnds 14-17: sc in each st around; 30 sts
Rnd 18: (invsc2tog, sc in next 3 sts)6x; 24 sts
Rnd 19: (invsc2tog, sc in next 2 sts)6x; 18 sts

You will see two fuzzy loops that are a little hard to make out, but that’s your st!

This is after rnd 3. During the increasing rnds the sts will be very close together. Use a st marker and count your sts until you become more comfortable with this yarn.

When changing colors, pull the new color through to complete the last st in previous color.

Then you can begin work in the next color.

Stop here to sew on the nose and eyes. The eyes cover over rnds 15 and 16, and are each the span of 4 sts, with 2 sts between them. Use an 8 inch piece of the Almond to sew on the nose, by sewing over one sts below and between the eyes.
Rnd 20: (invsc2tog, sc in next st)6x; 12 sts
Rnd 21: invsc2tog 6x; 6 sts
Fasten off, and weave tail around the sts to close.

The eyes will be over rnds 15 and 16, and cover 3 or 4 sts.

Use the same yarn that you used for the skin color, and sew over 2 sts below and between the eyes, about 5 times.

I have included some pictures for another style of eyes, if you’d like to have the lashes off to the side, rather than all going downward.

Arms, begin with Almond, make 2
Begin with magic ring.
Rnd 1: 6 sc in magic ring; 6 sts
Rnd 2: (inc, sc in next st)3x; 9 sts
Rnd 3: sc in each st around; 9 sts
To complete last st of rnd 3, pull through your blue or pink. Fasten off Almond.
Rnd 4: (invsc2tog, sc in next st)3x; 6 sts
Rnd 5: sc in each st around; 6 sts
Fold closed and sc across to close off the arm. Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing, and sew to the side of the body, just under the head. Note: I did not stuff the arms. I simply knotted off the loose ends and stuffed those inside the arms.

Hat, begin with Vintage White or White
Begin with magic ring.
Rnd 1: 6 sc in magic ring; 6 sts
Rnd 2: inc in each st around; 12 sts
Rnds 3-4: sc in each st around; 12 sts
Rnd 5: invsc2tog 6x; 6 sts
To complete last st of rnd 5, pull through your blue or pink. Fasten off Vintage White, and simply stuff the ball with the loose ends, and even the trimmings from the doll.
Continue with your blue or pink.
Rnd 6: sc in each st around; 6 sts
Rnd 7: (inc, sc in next st)3x; 9 sts
Rnd 8: sc in each st around; 9 sts
Rnd 9: (inc, sc in next 2 sts)3x; 12 sts
Rnd 10: sc in each st around; 12 sts
Rnd 11: (inc, sc in next 3 sts)3x; 15 sts
Rnd 12: sc in each st around; 15 sts
Rnd 13: (inc, sc in next 4 sts)3x; 18 sts
Rnd 14: sc in each st around; 18 sts
Rnd 15: (inc, sc in next 2 sts)6x; 24 sts
Rnd 16: (inc, sc in next 3 sts)6x; 30 sts
Rnd 17: (inc, sc in next 9 sts)3x; 33 sts
Rnds 18-19: sc in each st around; 33 sts
To complete last st of rnd 19, pull through Vintage White. Fasten off the blue or pink with a long tail for sewing the hat folded over.
Rnd 20: hdc in each st around; 33 sts
Fasten off the Vintage White, leaving long tail for sewing the hat onto the head.
First, use the long blue or pink tail, and from the inside of the hat, sew it through your first rnds of the hat (not the ball, but rnds 6 and 7). This folds the hat over for that slouched look. Then, pull the hat down onto the head, above the eyes, and sew evenly around the head.

Fold the ball of the hat over and use the loos pink (or blue) end to sew it down.

Sew just above the ball down to just above the white of the rim.

Then, sew the hat onto the head!
That’s it! This baby doll is so simple, and so soft. You will want to make a bunch of them!

  1. Love this pattern and the yarn is so soft and cuddly! I was at a yarn store recently and saw this yarn but didn’t pick it up because I had no idea how I would use it or what pattern to use. NOW, I’m going to run back (after 2 days of 30o temps) and pick some up!! THANKS!!!!

    • Thank you so much! My kiddos sure do love it. 🙂 If you need more ideas for stuffies with this yarn, check out my Puffy Stuffy patterns! They work up quickly as well, and kids love them!

  2. I have no more words because you are too creative. These dolls are so wonderful, and I am so glad to have seen everything that you have donated. These dolls are not your typical doll, but its uniqueness is what makes it special. It may look different for other, but I am loving it! if I am a rich person, I would love to own at least one of these dolls. I guess, it’s going to be a wonderful collection.

  3. I love this pattern . I have been looking for something just like this ! You have made me so happy . Thank you !

    • Yay!!! It makes me so happy when others delight in making these patterns. I hope you enjoy it!! 🙂

  4. I am making this doll today. I hope I’m doing the invsc2tog stitch correctly. I am going front-to-back through the front loop only of the 1st st, then coming back-to-front through the front loop only of the 2nd st, wrap, and pull through to finish stitch.
    Is that correct?
If there’s a video of this stitch, I would appreciate seeing it.
Thank you for the pattern – so cute!
