We have arrived at the heart of A Christmas Carol, with the Tiny Tim Hand Puppet. He is the sweetest little puppet, representing our disabled children, with so much hope and optimism. I’ve always loved his unwillingness to speak ill of anyone, and his ability to see the best in people and circumstances.

Materials:
Worsted Weight (4) Yarn – colors you feel are best suited!
Big Twist Value – Cream (A) – approximately 32 yds
Caron One Pound – Espresso (B) – approximately 36 yds
OR Red Heart Super Saver Yarn – Coffee
Red Heart Super Saver Yarn – Cafe (C) – approximately 22
Red Heart With Love – Tan (D) – approximately 18 yds
Red Heart Super Saver Yarn – Buff Flecks (E) – approximately 12 yds
Small amount of black worsted yarn for the eyes.
Crochet Hook, H-5mm

Terms and abbreviations to know:
magic ring
rnd, rnds – round, rounds
st, sts – stitch, stitches
sl st – slip stitch
sk – skip
sc – single crochet
dc – double crochet
inc – increase, 2 sc sts in same st
dec – combine 2 sts together to make 1 st
BLO – back loop only
FLO – front loop only
invsc2tog – invisible single crochet 2 together; this is essentially a decrease, but done in such a way as to make the continuous stitching smoother, and the decrease not as noticeable.
- Insert hook into front loop only of next stitch, DO NOT yarn over.
- Insert hook into front loop of second stitch.
- Yarn over. Pull through 2 loops.
- Yarn over and pull through last 2 loops.
dc bobble – double crochet bobble
- Yarn over, and insert hook into designated st.
- Pull up a loop.
- Yarn over, and pull through 2 loops, leaving 2 loops on hook.
- Yarn over, and insert hook into same st.
- Pull up a loop.
- Yarn over, and pull through 2 loops, leaving 3 loops on hook.
- Yarn over, and insert hook into same st.
- Pull up a loop.
- Yarn over, and pull through 2 loops, leaving 4 loops on hook.
- Yarn over, and insert hook into same st.
- Pull up a loop.
- Yarn over and pull through 2 loops, leaving 5 loops on hook.
- Yarn over and pull through all 5 loops.
Notes:
The body of the Tiny Tim Hand Puppet is worked from the top down, in the rnd, with no joining, unless otherwise specified. The arms, hair, hat, scarf, and crutch are made separately and sewn on. The eyes and nose are sewn on as well.
Size: This is one size, fitting child through adult, but if you wish to make it smaller for a smaller child to play with, simply tighten the gauge or go down a hook size.
Gauge: 6 sts across and 7 rnds down = approximately 2 inches
Tiny Tim Hand Puppet
Body – beginning at the head, with A
Begin with a magic ring.
Rnd 1: 6 sc in magic ring; 6 sts
Rnd 2: inc in each st around; 12 sts
Rnd 3: (inc, sc in next st)6x; 18 sts
Rnd 4: (inc, sc in next 2 sts)6x; 24 sts
Rnd 5: (3 inc, sc in next 9 sts)2x; 30 sts
Rnds 6-14: sc in each st around; 30 sts
Rnd 15: (3 invsc2tog, sc in next 9 sts)2x; 24 sts
Pull B through to complete the last st of rnd 15, and fasten off your skin color. Continue with B (dark brown for the jacket)
Rnd 16: (ch 7, sk next 4 sts, sc in next 8 sts)2x; 30 sts, counting the chs
Rnd 17: (sc into each of the 7 chs, sc in next 8 sts)2x; 30 sts
Rnds 18-25: sc in each st around; 30 sts
At the end of rnd 25, sl st into the FLO of the first st of the rnd, and ch 2.
Rnd 26: in FLO this rnd, dc in same st as joining sl st, dc in next 11 sts, ch 2 and sl st back into the same st as last dc, sl st in next st (should be about bottom center of the jacket), sl st in next st, ch 2, dc in same st as last sl st, dc in last 16 sts, join to the first dc of the rnd, and fasten off, weave in all ends up to this point.
Rnd 26a: attach lighter brown (C) into the first back loop, unworked from rnd 25, with a sc, and sc around in each BL, do not join, but work continuous rnds; 30 sts
Rnds 27-32: sc in each st around; 30 sts
Join to the first st of rnd 32 with a sl st, and fasten off. Weave in ends.
Arms, Make 2 – begin with skin color
In skin color.
Begin with magic ring.
Rnd 1: 6 st in magic ring; 6 sts
Rnd 2: (inc, sc in next st)3x; 9 sts
Rnds 3-4: sc in each st around; 9 sts
Rnd 5: dc bobble, sc in next 8 sts; 9 sts
Rnd 6: sc in each st around; 9 sts
Pull B (dark brown) through to complete the last st of rnd 6, and fasten off skin color.
Continue in B.
Rnds 7-8: sc into each st around; 9 sts
Rnd 9: (inc, sc in next 2 sts)3x; 12 sts
Rnds 10-13: sc in each st around; 12 sts
Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing. Weave in all the ends inside the arm, and then use the long tail to sew onto the arm holes of the body. Weave in ends.
Nose, in skin color
Using your tapestry needle and about 6 inches of the skin colored yarn, sew the nose over a few sts, center of the face, about rnd 12. Knot and weave in ends inside the puppet.
Eyes, in black
Using your tapestry needle and about 8 inches of black yarn, sew the eyes over about 4 sts, above and to each side of the nose, about rnd 9. Knot and weave in ends inside the puppet.
Hair, in D (tan)
Ch 7
Row 1: sc in 2nd ch from hook and next 5 chs; 6 sts
Row 2: ch 1 and turn, inc, sc in next 4 sts, inc; 8 sts
Row 3: ch 1 and turn, inc, sc in next 6 sts, inc; 10 sts
Rows 4-12: ch 1 and turn, sc in each st across; 10 sts
Row 13: ch 1 and turn, dec, sc in next 6 sts, dec; 8 sts
Row 14: ch 1 and turn, dec, sc in next 4 sts, dec; 6 sts
Do not turn
Rnd 1: continue to work 38 sc evenly around the hair until you get back to where you started. This amounts to 13 sc down each side, and 6 sc across the bottom, and the top.
Do not turn, but continue to make the two little side strands here: sl st into the first st of the rnd, ch 4, turn and sl st into the 2nd ch from hook, sc in next 2 chs, sl st into the next st of rnd 1, ch 5, turn and sl st into the 2nd ch from hook, sc in next 3 chs, sl st into the next st of rnd 1, and fasten off leaving a long tail for sewing. Sew the hair around the back, sides, and top of the head, leaving the two strands to stick out to the side. Weave in ends.
Hat, in C (cafe)
Ch 16
Row 1: turn and sc in 2nd ch from hook and each ch across; 15 sts
Row 2: ch 1 and turn, dec, sc in next 11 sts, dec; 13 sts
Row 3: ch 1 and turn, dec, sc in next 9 sts, dec; 11 sts
Row 4: ch 1 and turn, dec, sc in next 7 sts, dec; 9 sts
Row 5: ch 1 and turn, FLO this row to create the brim, sc in next 4 sts, 3 sc in 5th sts, sc in last 4 sts; 11 sts
Row 6: ch 1 and turn, sc in each st across; 11 sts
Row 7: ch 1 and turn, inc, sc in next 9 sts, inc; 13 sts
Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing. Sew the hat so that the first 4 rows are on the back of the head, sewing the back loops of row 4 down across the top of the head, and the brim down just on each side so that it will curve, leaving the two strands of hair sticking out of the hat. Weave in ends.
Scarf, in E (Buff Fleck) *be sure it doesn’t blend in too much with his skin color.
Ch 6
Row 1: turn and sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in each ch across; 5 sts
Rows 2-4: ch 1 and turn, sc in each st across; 5 sts
Row 5: ch 1 and turn, dec, sc in next 3 sts; 4 sts
Rows 6-11: ch 1 and turn, sc in each st across; 4 sts
Row 12: ch 21 (this is the part that will go around the puppet’s neck, above the arms), then reattach with a sc to the FLO of the first st of row 11, sc again in same st, sc in FLO of next 2 sts, and leave the last st of row 11 unused; 28 chs, 4 sts
Row 13: ch 1 and turn, sc in each st across; 4 sts
Row 14: ch 1 and turn, inc, sc in next st, dec; 4 sts
Rows 15-19: ch 1 and turn, sc in each st across; 4 sts
Row 20: ch 1 and turn, inc, sc in next 3 sts; 5 sts
Row 21: ch 1 and turn, sc in each st across; 5 sts
Fasten off, and weave in ends. The head will bend to fit the chain around it, and should fit snug, but I did not sew the scarf on. If making for a small child, maybe sew and secure the scarf for safety.
Crutch, in C (cafe) You can use any brown here that won’t immediately blend in with his hand or his jacket.
Ch 7
Row 1: turn and sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in each ch across; 6 sts
Rows 2-4: ch 1 and turn, sc in each st across; 6 sts
Row 5: fold down and crochet through row 4 and the beginning ch together, making 3 decreases; 3 sts
We will begin working in the round now, using the front and back loops of row 5 to create the first rnd, ch 1 and turn to begin:
Rnd 1: sc in FLO of next 3 sts, turn work and sc in the 3 unworked back loops that are now facing you, do not join; 6 sts
Continue in the round.
Rnds 2-12: sc in each st around; 6 sts
Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing. Sew the bottom of the crutch closed, and then sew the top of the crutch onto his hand. Weave in ends.
