The Ebenezer Scrooge Hand Puppet might not be the friendliest of characters to kick off our 2nd annual 12 Days of Christmas Crochet-a-Long. However, he just might be the most perfect! One of the most recognizable, and most performed and adapted Christmas stories is A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens, and this year, our puppets will be straight from this classic Christms tale of life lessons, priorities, regrets, love, and thankfulness.

Materials:

Worsted Weight (4) Yarn

For the night clothes I used Lion Brand Vanna’s Choice, Linen (A) – Other options are Red Heart Super Saver Yarn – Aran, Oatmeal, or Cornmeal (if you want a more yellowing look), also I Love This Yarn Linen or Ivory – the idea is that Scrooge is cheap and wouldn’t be wearing a new, perfectly white, nightgown – approximately 73 yds

Red Heart Super Saver Yarn – Buff (skin color) (B) – approximately 36 yds

Red Heart Super Saver Yarn – White (sideburns) (C)

Small amount of worsted weight black yarn for the eyes.

Crochet Hook, H-5mm

Stitch marker

Tapestry needle

Notes:

The body of the Ebenezer Scrooge Hand Puppet is worked from the top down, in the rnd, with no joining, beginning with the top of his nightcap. The arms, chin, nose, and sideburns are made separately and sewn on.

Size: This is one size, fitting child through adult, but if you wish to make it smaller for a smaller child to play with, simply tighten the gauge or go down a hook size.

Gauge: 6 sts across and 7 rnds down = approximately 2 inches

Fasten off A. Fold the last 4 rnds of the hat over the outside of the hat, as the brim.

Attach B (skin color) to the first BL of rnd 22, with sl st, ch 1. We will be picking up with the head, attached to rnd 22 of the hat, so the first 4 rnds of the head will also be 23-26, but with letters a-d.

Rnd 23a: sc in same sts as joining sl st, sc in BLO in each st around, do NOT join; 30 sts

Rnd 24b, 25c, 26d: sc in each st around; 30 sts

Rnd 34: (ch 7, sk next 4 sts, sc in next 8 sts)2x; 30 sts, counting the chs

Rnd 35: (sc into each of the 7 chs, sc in next 8 sts)2x; 30 sts

Rnds 36-42: sc in each st around; 30 sts

Rnd 43: (inc, sc in next 14 sts)2x; 32 sts

Rnds 44-48: sc in each st around; 32 sts

Fasten off, and weave in ends.

Before going on – fold the hat down to the front and to the side, and use the last end of color A from the hat, to sew it down about rnds 6 to rnd 20. Then weave the end in inside the puppet.

Chin in B (skin color)

Begin with magic ring.

Rnd 1: 6 sc in magic ring; 6 sts

Rnd 2: inc in each st around; 12 sts

Rnd 3: (inc, sc in next st)6x; 18 sts

Rnds 4-5: sc in each st around; 18 sts

Rnd 6: sc in next 9 sts, sl st in next st and leave the rest unworked; 9 sts

Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing. Sew the chin onto the face, with rnd 6 on rnd 31 of the face, and the remaining sts underneath on rnd 32. Weave in ends inside the puppet.

Nose in B (skin color)

Ch 4

Row 1: turn and sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next 2 chs; 3 sts

Row 2: ch 1 and turn, inc, sc in next st, inc; 5 sts

Row 3: ch 1 and turn, sc in each st across; 5 sts

Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing. Sew the nose from the top of rnd 27 to rnd 30, with some shaping. Row 3 should be at rnd 30 of the face, pinched a bit. Sew down the first st of the row, and then pinch together the second and fourth sts, skipping the third st so it gives the nose a point, and then sew down the last st of row 3, and around the rest of the nose, pinching the beginning ch together a bit like the top of a triangle. Weave in ends.

Eyes, in Black

Using black yarn, sew the eyes over about 3 sts around rnd 26. To put them on an “angry” slant, have the top of the eye above rnd 26, and the bottom going in below rnd 26. *pro-tip* wrap the yarn around itself (seen in third picture below) before putting back through to the inside of the head. Knot and weave in ends inside the puppets.

In skin color.

Begin with magic ring.

Rnd 1: 6 st in magic ring; 6 sts

Rnd 2: (inc, sc in next st)3x; 9 sts

Rnds 3-4: sc in each st around; 9 sts

Rnd 5: dc bobble, sc in next 8 sts; 9 sts

Rnd 6: sc in each st around; 9 sts

Pull A through to complete the last st of rnd 6, and fasten off skin color.

Rnd 9: (inc, sc in next 2 sts)3x; 12 sts

Rnds 10-14: sc in each st around; 12 sts

Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing. Weave in all the ends inside the arm, and then use the long tail to sew onto the arm holes of the body. Weave in ends.

Sideburns in (C) white

Ch 6, turn and sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next 3 chs, dc in last ch; 5 sts

Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing. Sew to the side from the brim of the hat down, beside the eyes. Weave in ends.

*Optional finishing touches – use a bit of white yarn to make Xs down the front of the gown for buttons. Weave ends inside the puppet.
