Once I finally got my hands on Red Heart Super Saver Retro Stripe yarn, all bets were off! I want to make every single one of my puffy stuffy patterns with this double stranded concept! The Retro Stripes mixed with the Bernat Baby Blanket Sparkle, is absolute perfection! It is so much fun!! The puffy stuffy narwhal has to be my new favorite! Just as magical as the unicorn, yet as practical as the sloth, this design is super easy to follow from start to finish!

Terms and abbreviations to know:

Magic ring

rnd, rnds – round, rounds

ch, chs – chain, chains

st, sts – stitch, stitches

sl st – slip stich

sc – single crochet

dc – double crochet

FLO – front loop only

inc – increase, work 2 sts into same st

Notes:

The Puffy Stuffy Narwhal pattern is worked in a round from the top, down, with no joining. Use a st marker to mark each rnd. The body and side finds are made all in one piece. The horn and back fin are made separately and sewn on. You can make it with just the blanket yarn OR you can double strand it with a worsted weight yarn to add more colors! The blanket yarn can be tricky to work with, so here are some tips: to be sure you’re not missing any sts, always count each rnd, until you’re more comfortable. Because the yarn is so thick, the sts will be very close together, especially during the increasing rnds. Do NOT pull yarn too tightly while sewing or closing, because it can break. Pull gently.

Puffy Stuffy Narwhal

Body, in A (remember, you can double strand with Retro Stripes!)

Begin with magic ring.

Rnd 1: 6 sc in magic ring; 6 sts

Rnd 2: inc in each st around; 12 sts

Rnd 3: inc in each st around; 24 sts

Rnd 4: (inc in next st, sc in next 3 sts)6x; 30 sts

Rnd 5-11: sc in each st around; 30

Rnd 12: in FLO of next st (3 dc, ch 3, sl st), sc in next 14 sts, in FLO of next st (sl st, ch 3, 3 dc), sc in next 14 sts; 38 sts

Rnd 13: (sc in the unworked back loop under the fin, sc in next 14 sts)2x; 30 sts

Pull up color B to complete the last st of rnd 13, keeping the Retro Stripes with it, if double stranding, and drop color A. (see picture below for the color change) Finish the stuffy with B, meant to represent the belly.

Rnd 14: (hdc, sc in next 14 sts)2x; 30 sts

Rnd 15: sc in each st around; 30 sts

Before you continue on to close, sew your eyes in place over rnd 9 with the lashes up to rnd 8. The sewn eyes span about 3 sts, with 4 sts between them, covering the span of 1 rnd. Sew a small amount of pink yarn to the outside and under the eyes. Knot inside the body. Using black worsted yarn, sew a small V for a mouth, centered, just above the white of the belly. Knot off inside the narwhal. Continue to close, stuffing as you go.

Rnd 16: (invsc2tog, sc in next 3 sts)6x; 24 sts

Rnd 17: invsc2tog 6x; 12 sts

Rnd 18: invsc2tog 6x; 6 sts

Complete stuffing, if you can put anymore through the middle.

Fasten off and weave the end around the hole to close.

Horn in C, (you can double strand, or not with this part!)

Begin with magic ring.

Rnd 1: 4 sc in magic ring; 4 sts

Rnd 2: (inc, sc in next st)2x; 6 sts

Rnd 3: (inc, sc in next 2 sts)2x; 8 sts

Rnd 4: (inc, sc in next 3 sts)2x; 10 sts

Rnd 5: (inc, sc in next 4 sts)2x; 12 sts

Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing. Sew horn to the top center of the head, sewn around rnd 3, to help it keep the width, and stuffed gently.

Back fins, in A (make 2) continue to double strand to match the body

Begin with magic ring

Rnd 1: 3 sc in magic ring; 3 sts (tip: don’t pull the magic ring closed until you’ve started with rnd 2)

Rnd 2: inc in each st around; 6 sts

Rnd 3: (inc, sc in next 2 sts)2x; 8 sts

Rnd 4: (inc, sc in next 3 sts)2x; 10 sts

Rnd 5: (invsc2tog, sc in next 3 sts)2x; 8 sts

Fasten off the first fin. On the second fin, you will now be joining it to the first.

Rnd 6: connect to the first fin with a sc to the first st of rnd 5, sc in next 2 sts, invsc2tog, sc in next 3 sts, and join to the other side of the second fin with a sc, sc in next 2 sts, invsc2tog, sc in next 3 sts; 14 sts

Rnd 7: sc in each st around; 14 sts

Pull up color B to complete the last st of rnd 6, and fasten off color A. Continue double stranding color B with Retro stripes if desired!

Rnd 8: sc in next 3 sts, invsc2tog, sc in next 5 sts, invsc2tog, sc in last 2 sts; 12 sts

Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing. Do not stuff. Use the tail from the first fin to close the hole between the two fins. Sew the last 2 rnds (B) to the first two rnds of B on the body of the narwhal.
