I have been making fleece lovey designs now for about 4 years, and the patterns always come with questions from those who may be skeptical about their level of difficulty, or concerns about their use, and how children enjoy them. Here, I’d like to take a few minutes to answer some of the frequently asked questions about these fun and unique loveys and security blankets!

FAQs About the Fleece Lovey Designs

Aren’t they too floppy? How are they played with?
They ARE indeed floppy, and the truth is that they definitely get more cuddles than play. My kids have enjoyed combining their play with their cuddles. Sometimes this is in helping them calm down for sleep at bed time, and sometimes this means playing quietly in their car seat, with a blankie. But they can be as creative as they want to be any other time!

What age range of children would enjoy these?
I’m not sure my own children are a fair depiction, as they do not own their own electronics or play with them much. They all still very much enjoy their stuffed animals (ages now 5 to almost 12)! But I can tell you that these have been enjoyed from about 3 months to 8 years here! At 3 months, they enjoy the varying textures of the fleece and yarn combination. They are easy to grab with small fingers. As the baby becomes more mobile, they enjoy twirling them around. My almost 5 year old still spins around with his loveys! My now 10 year old no longer plays with hers, but she sleeps with her mermaid lovey every night, and she actually didn’t even get one until she asked for her 7th birthday! Your experience may vary, but I do believe a wide variety of ages can enjoy these lovey dolls! They make great baby gifts, and grow with them as their play creative ideas change.

Are they machine washable?
That may depend upon the yarn you use. I typically use all acrylic yarns, so YES, they are machine washable AND dryer safe! Ours have been washed (gentle cycle) and dried (on low heat) several times. As with any toys you wash, they will show wear, and the yarn might fuzz a little, but they are still in tact, and very loved!

What is the finished size of the doll?
This may vary as well, depending on which lovey doll you’re making, and how tightly you crochet (I do recommend more loosely on these patterns to avoid puckering the fleece), but mine have all been around 30 to 32 inches tall or wide, depending on the largest dimension of your fleece lovey, be it a doll or an animal. The smaller lovey patterns are almost exactly half that size at around 16 inches.

How difficult are the fleece lovey designs to make?
This questions largely depends upon how much experience you have with crochet. The patterns are mapped out in great detail, from the cutting of the fleece, to the crocheting. I have tried to include everything I could think of, which might cause questions, in the pattern. But if any other questions arrise, you are welcome to email me for support! ekaygcrafts@gmail.com

Are the hair patterns for the dolls interchangeable?

Yes! If you have both patterns, you can use the ballerina hair for the mermaid or the mermaid hair for the ballerina! Their heads are the same size, and the base of the hair patterns are identical. You can even use this bonus FREE hair pattern from here on the blog.
