Jake and the Neverland Pirates

On Tuesday, we will be celebrating our baby’s 2nd birthday. Charlotte wasn’t interested in many TV programs for a long time, because, well, she was a baby. However, in recent months, she grew to really love Jake and the Neverland Pirates. I had to make her an Izzy Pirate doll! It was an interesting development considering that about 5 years ago, her oldest brother, Elijah, was selected to model on a box for Fisher Price, and we had never even heard of this show!

Elijah’s modeling debut! Age 4

I suppose you could say we have now come full circle, from our oldest child modeling for a toy from a show he’d never seen, to our youngest addition, loving this show more than any other. So she must have an Izzy doll for her birthday! And why not celebrate by sharing the free pattern with you all? Right?! Right!

Know how to crochet in rnds. This pattern is worked from the feet up, with no joining. Use a st marker as you work to mark the beginning of each rnd. The boots are made separately, so we will be starting the pattern with bare feet. Size of finished doll is approximately 16 inches tall. As a free pattern, this pattern has not been tested, but is accurate to the best of my abilities. Stop here to embroider the nose on. Using the same Honey color, cut a string from the end of your skein, and embroider the nose in the center of the face, over rnd 69.

Center the nose, and going in through the front to get the best look.

Go over the same spot about 4 times, put both ends inside, and knot off inside the head.
Stuff head firmly, and continue on to close up head. We will be sewing on the eyes, after.

Eyes, using smaller hook size, E and black, brown, and white yarn
Begin in black with magic ring.
Rnd 1:  4 sc in magic ring, join with sl st to first sc by pulling brown through for the sl st; 4 sts. Drop black yarn, but do NOT cut. You will be picking it back up in rnd 4.
Rnd 2: ch 1, inc in each st around, beginning with the same st as sl st, join with sl st to first sc by pulling white through for the sl st; 8 sts. Drop and cut brown.
Rnd 3: ch 1, (hdc, ch 1, sc) in same st as sl st, sc in next st, 2 hdc in next st, hdc in next st, 2 hdc in next st, (sc, ch 1, hdc) in next st, leave the rest of rnd unworked and fasten off white, leaving a tail for some sewing; 10 sts
Rnd 4: pick up black yarn at the beginning of rnd 3, through the first hdc. ch 1, do NOT work in the same st you pulled through, sl st in ch 1 space, and next 10 sts; 11 sts. Cut black yarn, but leave a long tail for sewing and adding eyelashes.Follow the extensive pictures for more details on the eyes, and for detailed instructions as to how to sew the eyes to the head. Pictured below is the RIGHT eye. Follow the instructions the same for the left, but obviously keep the eye lashes to the outside.

1. 4 sc in magic ring.

3. ch 1 and inc in each st around in Toffee.

5. ch 1 and work rnd 3

2. When joining to first sc, pull Toffee through, but don’t cut black.

4. when joining to first st, pull White through. Drop and cut Toffee.

6. pick up Black back in the first hdc of rnd 3.

7. After completing the sl sts of rnd 4, use one of your cut White pieces to embroider the speck in the eye.

9. Sew through the black sts into the head. Pull tightly, and go back through the black sts to the head, until all the way around the top of the eye.

11. Do NOT sew through both loops of the sts on the bottom. Sew through the back loop only to make the sts smaller. We’ll go back over them later.

13. After stitching in the eye lashes, go back UNDER the eye, but instead of stitching, you’re making a straight line across, for a thin “eye liner” look. Only go under one of the loops from the eye in the middle.

15. Cover that last sliver of brown, going over top of it and coming back out near the eye lashes, where you can knot off the black yarn.

8. Sew the eyes into place, at a slight angle pointed toward the nose.

10. Once you sew around the top of the eye, sew across the bottom in the same pattern; eye to head, eye to head.

12. As you get back around to the beginning, sew on the eye lashes. *Right eye pictured

14. Connect the black on the other side of the bottom of the eye, and then bring it back under the eye, to cover the one spot left.

16. Weave all the ends toward the top of the head. It really doesn’t matter what they look like there, as long as they’re secure, because later we will be sewing the hat/hair up there.
Optional Mouth: You can leave doll without a mouth, or embroider a simple mouth in black, just below the nose, as pictured. I did this before sewing on the bandanna, so that I could pull the loose ends up to the top of the head and knot them off there, and they’d be hidden under the cap.

For the mouth, I just made one large V under the nose, and two little Vs, at each corner of the mouth. I did this BEFORE sewing on the cap, so I could hide the ends at the top of the head.

At the end, you can use a small make-up brush and blush for the cheeks! I keep a Dollar Tree brand around just for dolls.
Ruffles on the bottom of the shirt: in Pink
This is easier to do BEFORE adding the arms.
Hold your doll with the head pointed toward your chin, and work sts through the unworked front loops of rnd 39. Begin with the first st of the rnd, on the right side of the doll, and work around;
Rnd 1: attach pink to first unworked st of rnd 39 with sl st, (sk next 2 sts, [sc, hdc, dc] in next st, [dc, hdc, sc] in next st) 9x, sl st to join and fasten off; 27 sts Important note: The final [dc, hdc, sc] will be made in the same st as first sl st where Pink was attached. This will make the transition smoother. When joining with the final sl st, make it underneath the first ruffle to hide it, then weave in ends securely.

Begin with sl st into the first unworked front loop of rnd 39.

Work the sts in, inserting hook down into the front loops from the top of the doll.
Arms beginning with Honey, make 2
Arms will be made in two parts, first the shoulder socket, and then the arm. The arm will then be sewn onto the socket, and the socket onto the shoulder. This is to get the look of her rounded shoulders.
Socket in Pink, make 2
Begin with magic ring.
Rnd 1: 6 sc in magic ring; 6 sts
Rnd 2: (inc in next st, sc in next st) 3x; 9 sts
Rnd 3: (inc in next st, sc in next 2 sts) 3x; 12 sts
Rnd 4: (inc in next st, sc in next 3 sts) 3x; 15 sts
Rnd 5-6: sc in each st around; 15 sts
Begin with magic ring.
Rnd 1: 6 sc in magic ring; 6 sts
Rnd 2: sc in each st around; 6 sts
Rnd 3: (inc, sc in next 2 sts) 2x; 8 sts
Rnd 4-5: sc in each st around; 8 sts
Rnd 6: inc in next st, dc bobble in next st (thumb), sc in next 6 sts; 9 sts
Rnd 7-17: sc in each st around; 9 sts
Rnd 18: (
inc, sc in next 2 sts) 3x; 12 sts
Rnd 19-21: sc in each st around; 12 sts
Fasten off, and attach Pink.
Rnd 22: in Pink, sc in each st around; 12 sts
Rnd 23: BLO, sc in each st around, sl st into first st of rnd; 12 sts
Rnd 24: ch 1 and turn and turn arm around so that you are working DOWN the arm, through the unworked front loops of rnd 22, (3 hdc in next st, sl st in next st) 6x, sl st under the first ruffle, to hide the joining; 24 sts

1. rnd 24 of the arm, turn and work through the unworked front loops of rnd 22.

3. sl st under the first ruffle to join, so that it is hidden. Then use your tail to gently sew the ruffles down to the arm.

5. pin the arm up to the shoulder, and sew around, sewing the top to the shoulder, and the bottom, just under it, to the body.

2. work around in the opposite direction you worked rnds 1-23, so that the sts are all on the right side.

4. pin the shoulder socket in place, and sew.

6. I sewed the arms on with the thumbs on the outside, as though she’s opening her arms for a hug. You can sew them on with thumbs to the inside if you prefer.

Bandanna and Hair: using Pink Grapefruit for bandanna and Chocolate for hair.
Begin with Rose
Begin with magic ring.
Rnd 1: 6 sc in magic ring; 6 sts
Rnd 2: inc in each st around; 12 sts
Rnd 3: (inc, sc in next st) 6x; 18 sts
Rnd 4: (inc, sc in next 2 sts) 6x; 24 sts
Rnd 5: (inc, sc in next 3 sts) 6x; 30 sts
Rnd 6: (inc, sc in next 4 sts) 6x; 36 sts
Rnd 7: (inc, sc in next 5 sts) 6x; 42 sts
Rnd 8: (inc, sc in next 6 sts) 6x; 48 sts
Rnd 9: (inc, sc in next 7 sts) 6x; 54 sts
Rnd 10-17: sc in each st around; 54 sts
At the end of rnd 17, attach Chocolate.
Row 1: sc in next 25 sts, sl st in next st; 26 sts (including the sl st)
Row 2: ch 1 and turn, sk sl st, sl st in next 2 sts; sc in next 3 sts, hdc in next 15 sts, sc in next 3 sts, sl st last 2 sts; 25 sts
Row 3: ch 1 and turn, sk first sl st, sl st in next st, sc in next 4 sts, hdc in next 14 sts, sc in next 4 sts, sl st in last st; 24 sts Fasten off, leave long tail of both Pink Grapefruit and Chocolate, for sewing onto head.
Look at the pictures for details about the decorative embroidery on the bandanna.

1. For the decorative stitching around the cap, first I just wove the white yarn in and out, over 2 sts at a time, skipping 1 st. Do this all the way around the cap.

2. Then I just stitched in simple circles at the edge of each line by going up 2 rnds for the first insert, then up an additional rnd to pull through.

3. Basically just stitch around a circle, and then go back to cover the other spaces with white.

4. Keep going around until you’ve covered the whole outer circle in white.

5. You will use some of the same holes repeatedly to get the white all the way around.

6. It doesn’t really matter how you accomplish this look, but try to finish back where you began.

7. Then, cover the one space you skipped over when going around the first time, coming out at the end of the next white line to begin another circle.

Bandanna Ties: Pink Grapefruit
Ch 41
Rnd 1: *sl st in first 2 chs, sc in next 3 chs, hdc in next 4 chs, dc in next 5 chs, hdc in next 2 chs, sc in next 9 chs, hdc in next 2 chs, dc in next 5 chs, hdc in next 4 chs, sc in next 3 chs, sl st in last 2 chs.* Turn work so that you are working all of the next sts into the unworked bottom of the chs, repeat from * to *
Fasten off, and tie it into a knot in the center. Then weave in your ends, and sew the center knot to the back center of the bandanna cap.
Sew the bandanna to her head, leaving a little bit of space above the eyes.

1. At the end of the ch, turn to work through the bottom of the chs.

2. Work your first st on the other side into the very first loop you can see.

3. Tie the finished bandanna bow right in the center.

4. Pull the knot tight, and sew knot onto the back center of the bandanna, just above the hair.

5. Sew the knot onto the back center of the cap BEFORE you sew the cap to the head. This way, you can knot off and hide loose ends under the cap.

6. When sewing the cap on head, I go over top, cap to head, cap to head. This provides a nice even seam.
Hair wisps (bangs): Chocolate
This is made in such a way that both wisps can be made on 1 ch with the right side facing for sewing on.
Ch 19
Row 1: sl st in first ch, sc in next ch, (hdc dec) 2x, sc in next 3 chs, 3 sc in next ch, sl st in next 2 chs, sc in next 2 chs, hdc in next ch, 2 hdc in next ch, sc in next ch, sl st in last ch.
Sew above her right eye, part to her head, and part to the bandanna.

1. Hair wisps are those from the front, right side of her face. They are made in one piece, and the bent corner is where it will be sewn onto the head.

2. Pin and sew above her right eye. I only attached it at the corner, and a little above the eye, so that they are not flat to her head.
Pig Tails: Make 2 in Chocolate and Terracotta
With Chocolate first, begin with magic ring.
Rnd 1: 6 sc in magic ring; 6 sts
Rnd 2: sc in each st around; 6 sts

Rnd 5: sc in next 2 sts, inc in next 2 sts, sc in next 6 sts; 12 sts
Rnd 6: sc in next 2 sts, inc in next 4 sts, sc in next 6 sts; 16 sts

Rnd 13: (invsc2tog, sc in next st) 4x; 8 sts
Rnd 14: (inc, sc in next st) 4x; 12 sts

Rnd 18: (inc, sc in next 2 sts) 4x; 16 sts
Rnd 19: sc in each st around; 16 sts
Rnd 20: (invsc2tog) 8x; 8 sts

Fasten off, leaving long tail for sewing. Sew the pigtails into place in the back side, onto the hair in the back of her head.

Pin the ponytail into place, and sew on securely. I went around it twice!

Be sure the points of the ponytail, at the bottom, are pointed slightly out.

This is a final picture of the back to see how it all should look once completed.

Ears/Earrings: Honey for the ears, Daffodil for the earrings. Use whatever yellow yarn you have on hand.
I didn’t do the ears until this point of the pattern because I needed to make sure they had a place, and would look right. This way, with everything else sewn on already, you can make sure they are evenly stitched on the sides of her head.
For ears:
With Honey, Ch 4
sc in first ch, inc in next ch, (sc, sl st) in last ch; 5 sts
Fasten off.
For earrings:
With Daffodil, ch 3, sl st into bottom of the ear, fold it over, and sew it to itself through to the back of the ear. Knot off, and weave all ends carefully through the ear, and then around the top of the head, under the cap.

1. Pin and sew the ear into place before attaching earring.

3. Cut the string after sl st, and use it to sew earring together to the back of ear.

4. Using the loose string from the front, sew it through the ear, to the other end of the earring, folded against the back of the ear.

Rnd 6: (inc, sc in next 4 sts) 3x; 18 sts
Rnd 7: (inc, sc in next 5 sts) 3x; 21 sts
Rnd 8: (inc, sc in next 6 sts) 3x; 24 sts
Rnd 9: sc in each st around; 24 sts
Working in turning rows now, instead of rnds, do not join at the end of each row. You will be leaving an open space we will sew some later.

Row 1: ch 1 and turn, sc in each of the next 23 sts, leaving last st unworked; 23 sts

1. For row 1, turn and work wrong side.

2. Leave the last st of the round unworked, and turn, working rows.
Row 2-10: ch 1 and turn, sc in each st across; 23 sts
At the end of row 10, turn the heel inside out, and sl st end together to close the back of the boot. Fasten off. Back to working in rnds.

3. At the end of row 10, you will be turning inside out to close the heel.

4. Flip row 10 back, turning inside out.

5. Fold row 10 against itself, and sl st through both sides to connect and close the heel.

6. Sl st all the way across to close the heel, and then turn back right side out.

Rnd 1: reattach Terracotta to the back of the heel, and sc 24 evenly around, do not join; 24 sts
Rnd 2-5: sc in each st around; 24 sts
Rnd 6: (inc, sc in next 7 sts) 3x; 27 sts
Rnd 7: (inc, sc in next 8 sts) 3x; 30 sts
Rnd 8: (inc, sc in next 9 sts) 3x; 33 sts
Rnd 9: (inc, sc in next 10 sts) 3x; 36 sts
Rnd 10-17: sc in each st around; 36 sts
Rnd 18: (invsc2tog, sc in next 10 sts) 3x; 33 sts
Fasten off, and weave in all your loose ends. Just fold the top down for the look, and the back has a natural heel!

Pixie Dust Pouch and Necklace: Daffodil, or whatever yellow you have. Chocolate for the chain.
Beginning with Daffodil, start with a magic ring.
Rnd 1: 6 sc in magic ring; 6 sts
Rnd 2: inc in each st around; 12 sts
Rnd 3: (inc, sc in next st) 6x; 18 sts
Rnd 4-6: sc in each st around; 18 sts
Rnd 7: (invsc2tog, ch 1, sk next st) 6x, join with sl st in first st; 6 sts and 6 ch 1 spaces
Rnd 8: (sl st into next ch 1 space, ch 2, 3 hdc in same ch 1 space) 6x, join with sl st and fasten off. Weave in ends.
For the chain, using Chocolate.
Ch 55, fasten off.
Weave the ch in and through the ch 1 spaces left in the pouch. Pull so that the ends are even. Here you can either connect it with your loose ends and weave them into the ch, leave them open for tying on, or (what I did), use this video to create a magic knot which doesn’t leave any ends! Just get the knot as close to the chain as possible.
