I have been making these puppets now for more than 3 years, and somehow, I had not yet made a llama hand puppet. How is that even possible?! Llamas are basically the spokesanimals for yarn. Like, if you saw an ad on TV for yarn, it would likely involve a llama, walking…sauntering really, while talking to you through the camera. “True, you might not need that yarn, but did you ever stop to think about how that yarn might need you. Don’t be selfish, that scarf can make itself.”
It practically writes itself, which begs the question, where are all the yarn ads? I feel like we need these in our lives, at such a time as this. Talking llamas make everything better. Yarn is just a perk.
Anyway friends! You can make this llama talk! The llama hand puppet is the latest design in this style, and I think she’s pretty special. With that Hook Nook, Yummy yarn, she certainly lives up to the llama softness!
If you’re interested in a printer-friendly PDF of the llama hand puppet pattern, you can find the design in my Ravelry or Etsy shops! If you prefer to use the free blog copy below, I still appreciate you being here! And another great way to support my blog is simply by sharing! Thank you for supporting my business!

Notes: The body of the Llama Hand Puppet is worked from the top down, in the rnd, with no joining. The arms, ears, hair, and snout, are made separately and sewn on. The eyes, nose, and mouth are sewn on with black dk yarn, but worsted would work just as well. Pages 2-4 are printer-friendly, with just the written pattern. Pages 5-6 contain process pictures to better help with the steps.
Size: This is one size, fitting child through adult, but if you wish to make it smaller for a smaller child to play with, simply tighten the gauge or go down a hook size.
Gauge: 6 sts across and 7 rnds down = approximately 2 inches
Body – beginning at the head, with A
Begin with a magic ring.
Rnd 1: 6 sc in magic ring; 6 sts
Rnd 2: inc in each st around; 12 sts
Rnd 3: (inc, sc in next st)6x; 18 sts
Rnd 4: (inc, sc in next 2 sts)6x; 24 sts
Rnds 5-7: sc in each st around; 24 sts
Rnd 8: (3 inc, sc in next 9 sts)2x; 30 sts
Rnds 9-12: sc in each st around; 30 sts
Rnd 13: (3 invsc2tog, sc in next 9 sts)2x; 24 sts
Rnds 14-15: sc in each st around; 24 sts
Rnd 16: (ch 7, sk next 4 sts, sc in next 8 sts)2x; 30 sts, counting the chs
Rnd 17: (sc into each of the 7 chs, sc in next 8 sts)2x; 30 sts
Rnds 18-32: sc in each st around; 30 sts
Fasten off and weave in ends.
Nails – in B Make 2 (these will be joined to go up into the arms)
Begin with magic ring.
Rnd 1: 4 sc in magic ring; 4 sts
Rnd 2: (inc, sc in next st)2x; 6 sts
Rnd 3: sc in each st around; 6 sts
Fasten off the first one, and repeat to make the second nail. After the second nail, do not fasten off, but continue into the arm.
Arm, continuing where you left off after rnd 3, with color B
Rnd 4: join with sc to the first st of rnd 3 of the first nail, sc in next 3 sts, dc bobble in last 2 sts of that nail, and dc bobble into the 1st 2 sts rejoining to the 2nd nail, sc in last 4 sts of 2nd nail, pulling color A through to complete the last st; 12 sts
Continue in color A
*NOTE: I stopped at about rnd 7, turned it inside out, and weaved in my ends. Use the long tail left from color B to sew the closure between the nails, and then weave in all the beginning ends. It’s easier here than after the whole arm is complete.
Rnds 5-14: sc in each st around; 12 sts
Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing. Sew onto the arm holes in the body. Weave in ends inside the puppet.
Snout, in B – see picture 8
Begin with magic ring.
Rnd 1: 6 sc in magic ring; 6 sts
Rnd 2: inc in each st around; 12 sts
Rnd 3: (inc, sc in next st)6x; 18 sts
Rnd 4: sc in each st around; 18 sts
Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing. Before sewing to the face, stitch on the mouth and nostrils with the black yarn. Then sew the snout to the center of the face, between the arms.
Ears, make 2, in A
The ears are worked in a single rnd, crocheted around both sides of a ch.
Ch 7, turn and sl st into the 3rd ch from hook, sc in next ch, hdc in next ch, dc in next ch, 4 dc in last ch, and turn to continue working on the bottom side of the ch, dc in next ch, hdc in next ch, sc in next ch, sl st in last ch, and fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing. Sew the ears to the top of the head, around ends 3-5 on either side of center.
Hair, in B – see pictures 9-10
Ch 6
Row 1: turn and dc bobble in 3rd ch from hook, sc in next ch, dc bobble in next ch, sc in last ch; 4 sts
Row 2: ch 1 and turn, inc in first st, sc in next 2 sts, inc, in last st; 6 sts
Row 3: ch 1 and turn, work this row over top of the sts from row 2, into the same sts as row 2, (dc bobble, sc) into the first st, dc bobble in next st, sc in next st, (dc bobble, sl st) into last st; 6 sts
Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing. Sew the hair to the top of the head, with row 1 at the top, between the ears, and row 3 downward. Weave in ends.
Eyes in black
Using black yarn, sew the eyes on around rnds 7 and 8. Pictures below show the process of creating the lashes. You can also view this video HERE for help, which shows me stitching the eyes onto one of my lovey puppets.
