The Princely Knight Hand Puppet is the final puppet in the Fairy Tale Puppet collection!! Maybe he’s the hero, or maybe he’s the one needing to be rescued! But either way, he makes a perfect final addition to this series of creative toys which should inspire your child to bring their stories to life! Make a dashing prince, or a daring knight, with this two in one pattern!
This pattern was originally published on The Hook Nook blog, and is now featured here on EkayG! You can see the whole collection here, or purchase the whole pattern set from my Ravelry or Etsy shops! Or continue below for the free pattern!
Notes: This pattern comes with instructions for making the prince OR the knight. It is worked from the top down, in the rnd, with no joining. The arms, hair, and accessories are made separately and sewn on. The eyes are embroidered on with black worsted weight yarn; the nose with matching skin color.
Size: This is one size, fitting child through adult, but if you wish to make it smaller for a smaller child to play with, simply tighten gauge or go down a hook size.
Gauge: 7 sts across and 8 rnds down = approximately 2 inches
Materials:
For the Prince:
Lion Brand Vanna’s Choice, Beige – approximately 35 yds
Lion Brand Vanna’s Choice, Colonial Blue – approximately 30 yds
Lion Brand Vanna’s Choice, Honey – approximately 20 yds
Lion Brand Vanna’s Choice, Scarlet – approximately 30 yds
Lion Brand Vanna’s Choice, Mustard – approximately 2 yds
For the Knight:
Lion Brand Vanna’s Choice, Beige – approximately 35 yds
Lion Brand Vanna’s Choice, Silver Heather (light grey) – approximately 65 yds
Lion Brand Vanna’s Choice, Silver Grey (dark grey) – approximately 35 yds
Lion Brand Vanna’s Choice, Mustard – approximately 2 yds
For both:
Small amount of worsted weight black yarn for the eyes.
Crochet hook size G – 4.25mm
Tapestry needle
***NOTE: I originally wrote this pattern with Lion Brand’s Vanna’s Choice in mind, but that yarn has been discontinued. Here are some other comparable yarn suggestions!
- Caron One Pound: it feels a little thicker in my hands, but is still a medium worsted weight yarn, and they have a great color selection!
- Red Heart with Love: again, feels a bit thicker than Vanna’s Choice, but softer than the Red Heart Super Saver, and offers a wide variety of colors!
- Any worsted weight yarn would work!

Fasten off, leaving long tail for sewing.
Prince ONLY: Using a strand of Mustard, sew the lines onto the arms as pictured. Knot off on the inside and weave in ends.
Sew the arms onto the arm holes. I pulled the arms through from the inside of the body, with thumbs pointed toward the head, then sewed the sleeve INSIDE the body, to avoid seams.
Sewing on nose and eyes
With the same yarn as your skin color, embroider the nose on the center of the face, about the 5th rnd up from the top of the shirt, wrapping the yarn around the same spot about 5 times, until you have a nice little bobble.
Then, with black yarn, embroider the eyes about 1 to 2 rnds above the nose, with about 3 sts between them. The trick to getting the arch is to wrap the yarn around itself on the arch, and sew back through the head. Fasten all ends off inside the puppet, and weave in.
Hair for Prince ONLY (Honey) (see top 2 images of picture below)
NOTE: If you are making the Knight, skip the hair, and go straight to the helmet

Sew to the back of the head, around the bottom and side, but leave the point sticking up. You will sew the mask to this. The point is simply where one of your increases fell in your final rnd. I did not do anything special here to make that more prominent. It comes together when you sew it to the front of the mask.
