This time of year is exciting for me, because it is officially watermelon season! Watermelons are my favorite fruit, hands down. They are the only fruit I can legitimately pass off as dessert…to myself. A bowl of diced up watermelon in front of me may as well be candy. I just can’t stay out of it!

If you have known me and my designs long enough, you know that I love creating unconventional things with traditional toys. My very first stacking pattern was a fun cheeseburger! I believe so many of those simple stacking and sorting toys from my own childhood, are incredibly beneficial to brain development in our own little ones.

This watermelon nesting bowl set is especially fun! While all together, it resembles a triangular slice of watermelon, and as you take them out, it is as though you are eating down to the rind. Little ones will enjoy stacking them over and over!

Materials:
Worsted weight yarn in green, white, pink, and black.
For a multi-toned look of a watermelon rind, I used Red Heart Super Saver Green Tones
And my pink was Caron Simply Soft Watermelon
Crochet Hook – F, 3.75mm
Optional: 6mm black safety eyes (but you could just sew on black yarn for eyes)
Terms and abbreviations to know:
magic ring
st, sts – stitch, stitches
sc – single crochet
inc – increase, work 2 sts into 1 st
BLO – back loop only

invsc2tog – invisible single crochet 2 together; this is essentially a decrease, but done in such a way as to make the continuous stitching smoother and the decrease not as noticeable

  1. Insert hook into front loop only of next stitch, DO NOT yarn over.
  2. Insert hook into front loop of second stitch.
  3. Yarn over. Pull through 2 loops.
  4. Yarn over and pull through last 2 loops.
Notes: Bowls are worked from largest to smallest. To assure proper fit, occasionally insert the next size into the previous one, as the fits may vary, depending on yarn used. My yarns were worsted weight, but still on the thinner side. Bowls are worked in continuous rnds without joining. Color changes are made by pulling the next color through to complete the previous st. This is pictured below, where you insert the seeds.
This pattern is available for free on my blog here, but if you wish to download a printer-friendly copy and avoid the ads, it can be found in my Ravelry shop for a small fee.
