Welcome to the 4th and final pattern in my Under the Sea Crochet a Long! Would it even be under the sea, if we didn’t have a shark?! This pattern was supposed to be released about a month ago, but due to some set backs with my new website, it was delayed. How perfect is it that the release of this pattern, now coinciedes with The Discovery Channel’s Shark Week?!

As always, this pattern is free here on the blog, but if you’d like a printer-friendly copy, you can purchase one for a low cost in my Ravelry or Etsy shops.

Make your little shark lover a puppet to complete their set, and terrorize the locals! 🙂

Notes:

This pattern is worked from the top down, in the rnd, with no joining. The fins and eyes are made separately and sewn on. Pictures below can give more details into the process. I originally used Vanna’s Choice, Dusty Blue for this pattern, but it has become increasingly difficult to find in stores or even online. Any blue/gray worsted weight yarn will work for this pattern!

Size: This is one size, fitting child through adult, but if you wish to make it smaller for a smaller child to play with, simply tighten gauge or go down a hook size.

Gauge: 7 sts across and 8 rnds down = approximately 2 inches

Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing. Sew the arm over the hole, sewing the bottom (where your increases are) to the 5th rnd beneath the arm, and up, and then sewing the top of the arm to the top of the arm hole, then down the other side again. This will allow the hole to still provide a place for the finger, while also keeping that triangular shape of the side fin.

Do NOT turn, but continue to sc around the entire fin, about 40 sts. Fasten off leaving a long tail for sewing. Sew onto the bottom side of your shark, slightly to the back so the seam cannot be seen from the front of the puppet.

Fasten off, leaving a very long tail for sewing.

Embroidered black teeth:

Using black yarn, stitch the Vs of the teeth into the face, about 2 rnds down from the top, and 3 sts from each side. Use pictures for more details. Also sew the nostrils centered above the teeth. Knot black yarn behind the face. Sew the white down to the body with the widest part on the lower part of the head, and the narrow part down to the bottom of the puppet, off toward the back fin.

Top Fin

in blue/gray

Begin with magic ring.

Rnd 1: 4 sc in magic ring; 4 sts

Rnd 2: (inc, sc in next st)2x; 6 sts

Rnd 3: sc in each st around; 6 sts

Rnd 4: (inc, sc in next 2 sts)2x; 8 sts

Rnd 5: sc in each st around; 8 sts

Rnd 7: (inc, sc in next 4 sts)2x; 12 sts

Rnd 8: (inc, sc in next 5 sts)2x; 14 sts

Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing. Sew onto the top center of the head, with the front of it right on rnd 1 and the back going down the back side of the head.

Eyes

in Black, White, and blue/gray

Rnd 1: in Black, 4 sc in magic ring, join with sl st to first st; 4 sts

*Note: To change to white here, follow the pictures below. Once you have done the sl st in black, pull the loop up. Tie the white into that loop and slide the white knot down the back side of that black loop. Put hook back into the black loop and pull tightly around the hook. Then ch 1 with the white yarn, and fasten off the black. Continue in white.

Rnd 2: (sc, hdc) together into the same st as joining sl st, 2 sc in next st, (sc, hdc) together in next st, pull through Dusty Blue to end last hdc, and using the blue, 2 sc in last st, sl st in first st of the rnd to join; 8 sts

Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing. Use one of the white tails to sew a fleck in the eye, and knot off all but the blue in the back and trim. These will puff the eyes out a bit without any stuffing. Position the eyes at a slant, about 2 sts apart, 2 rnds up from the white of the face, and 2 sts from the sides. Sew the eyes in place using the long blue tail, going TWICE around each st. Knot off and weave in ends.
