The new year often brings new ideas and new creative inspirations, but this year has me returning to some of the old. Maybe it’s nostalgia, but I am falling in love with this unicorn fleece lovey pattern all over again. Due to the level of difficulty, these are my premium patterns, and sell for $6.50, coming with two separate patterns for the two different sizes. However, check below for a discount just for finding it here on my blog!

In 2025 we saw the closing of an iconic craft store, Joann’s, and with it went its amazing fleece selection. I don’t know if we will ever see such variety of fleece fabrics anywhere else ever again. Going through all the fleece I’ve collect from them over the years has me wanting to return to so many of these patterns. I decided to start with this one. It has been 8 years since I first designed this pattern, and it was time for a bit of an upgrade.

Small lovey: about 11 inches wide, 15 inches tall

Polyester fleece – large – about ½ yard

      small – about 2, 12-inch squares

Fabric cutting mat – at least 12×18

45mm Heavy Duty Rotary cutter

45 mm Skip stitch rotary blade – make sure the cuts are approximately ½ inch apart, blade should have 12 points for cutting

Yarn used can be flexible! I have made these with 4 and 5 ply yarns as well as thinner plush yarns such as Premier Parfait Chunky. I have even doubled stranded dk weight yarns (as pictured here on the smaller lovey), for nice texture and great color with some leftover hand-dyed yarn!

Small amount of worsted weight black yarn for the eye.

Crochet hook size H – 5mm

Tapestry needle

Stitch marker

This small lovey was made by double stranding some leftover hand dyed yarn that I had on hand, and I LOVE how it turned out!

Designer’s Notes and Dicount Code!

These fleece lovey patterns are less complicated than they look! I know that cutting and crocheting around fabric can seem intimidating. I was scared at first too! But these patterns are made simple as long as you have the right materials. The cut of the fleece doesn’t have to be perfect, because crocheting around it hides any imperfections. The only area of the fleece where the measurement should be pretty accurate is at the neck, so that the right amount of stitches fit there to follow the pattern on to the head. You can do this! And if you need a little assistance, email me at ekaygcrafts@gmail.com, and I can help you through it.

You can save $1.50 on this pattern just as a thank you for visiting my blog! Use code UNICORNLOVE at checkout in my Etsy shop!
