It isn’t often that I get out to Hobby Lobby. I have a JoAnn’s right down the road a few miles, as well as a Michael’s. The two Hobby Lobby stores in the area are each about 10 miles away, and not on my way to anything. However, I will occassionally make trips out there for special items. With this Unicorn Scrubby, this was not really the case. I have been going crazy with either a lack of ideas or too many ideas recently, stagnant on all of my larger pattern designs I have been working on, and just itching for a small satisfying project that I could finish in a single afternoon. And that is how I landed myself in Hobby Lobby, in search of new inspiration.
Has this ever happened to you before? Have you ever had too many ideas, or too many complicated patterns or larger projects on the hook, that they stressed and overwhelmed you? This quick little number might be just the project for you then! It helped me out of my unproductive rut, provided inspiration for many other small ideas, and made my unicorn loving daughter even more excited about bath time!
Also, this pattern is not limited to just a scrubby! You can use larger hooks and giant yarn, and turn it into a little nursery decor; a basket for trinket toys, you name it! You can double up the yarn to make it thicker. Fill it with soap or candies for Valentine’s Day or Easter! The biggest, most amazing perk to this pattern though, is that there is NO SEWING!
Say what?!
The Unicorn Scrubby is made all in one single piece, with no sewing of pieces!! This is a huge win in my maker book! I hope you love it as much as I do!
If you’re interested in a printer-friendly PDF of the unicorn scrubby pattern, you can find the design in my Ravelry or Etsy shops! Some FAQs about the Scrubbies
Can they be washed and dried?
This depends on the yarn you use. If you use cotton or acrylic, then yes! If you use the recommended yarn in this pattern for the scrubbies, then no. They can be washed and hung to dry.
How long do they last when used in baths?
This is yet to be determined! I will update this after my daughter wears her own out. We use it multiple times before washing though, by simpling hanging it up to dry after her bath.
Will the scrubby lather like a loofah, for washing?
The lather is definitely not as good as you would have with a loofah. Admitedly, these are more of just a fun bath toy, than really good for washing or scrubbing, but my daughter has enjoyed hers!
Are they too rough on the skin?
This yarn feels soft in the skein, much like a loofah. Then when it is stitched up, it becomes stiff and somewhat scratchy. No worries! It softens up nicely once wet! It never dries quite as stiff again, after the first bath, but still holds a little of it’s shape.
Do they float in the tub?
Not really. Maybe only for a very short time. The head will tip forward, and once the yarn becomes wet through, it won’t float at all.

Notes: The body of the Unicorn Scrubby is worked from the bottom up, in the rnd, with no joining. It is all made in one piece, with color changes, so there are no sewing parts! The unicorn back is left open, with no stuffing, to place the soap in for clean, creative fun! Use it as a bath toy, a soap saver, a dish scrubby, or just a fun soap dish! Up the yarn and hook size to make a small basket for some nursery decor! It makes a great place for holding small trinket toys, or a small diaper basket for the changing table area!

Rnd 18: sl st into FLO of next st, pulling yellow through for the horn, with yellow ch 5, sl st into 3rd ch from hook, sc in next ch, hdc in last ch, pulling white through to complete last st, fasten off yellow, sc2tog, sc in BLO behind the ear, sc in next 4 sts, pink dc bobble, sc2tog, sc in next 2 sts, sc in BLO behind ear, sc in last st and fasten off leaving a long tail for sewing closed; 12 sts around (not including the horn)
Before closing, use black cotton yarn to sew on the eyes, about rnds 14-15. Then knot and tuck all ends inside the head. I weaved in some of them, but did not weave in the yellow. I just knotted the yellow two ends with each other and trimmed them, tucking them back inside the head. Using your tapestry needle, weave the end through the front loop of each st and the back loops behind the horn, and pull closed. Knot and weave inside the head. Weave in ends from the beginning and the tail.
