I am a child of the 90s, but I am from a country rural area, where fashion and music trends were often delayed. I have been behind the trends my entire life, so it is little surprise that I bring you this velvet sunflower scrunchie pattern, about two years after they hit the scene.
No worries though! It’s all in perfect timing. While playing around with velvet scrunchies and prepping for two upcoming markets, I discovered I could make a scrunchie look like a sunflower, and I. FELL. IN. LOVE! Pictures don’t even do these justice! They are SO pretty in person! Sunflowers have always been my favorite flower! So combining my love for the 90s AND giant sunflowers, here we are.

Pattern Notes
This pattern is made in 2 rnds, around an elastic band. You can easily adjust the pattern for the weight of the yarn by simply using multiples of 3 for your st total in the beginning rnd. For the Vel-Luxe yarn, I used 60 sts in the first rnd, and that is what I will be writing up in this pattern. For Bernat Velvet, which is a weight 5 yarn, I used only 48 sts in the beginning rnd.
Velvet Sunflower Scrunchie
Begin with your yarn in a slip knot on your hook, the hook in front of the elastic band, and the working yarn behind the elastic.
Rnd 1: 60 sc around the elastic band, do not join; 60 sts
Scrunch them together, because you will start to run out of space on the elastic at about 30 stitches. Keep pushing them together to give you more space for sts.
Rnd 2: [(sc, hdc, dc) in next st, picot, (dc, hdc, sc) in next st, sc in next st] 20x; 140 sts, 20 picots
To finish, sl st into the first st and fasten off. Weave in ends.
