Pocket Princess Belle

Last fall, when my daughter was star of the week for her class, I free handed more than a dozen tiny little characters, I called pocket pals or pocket princesses. This is the first of those patterns I have actually written up, and just in time for this timeless classic to reappear in theaters (though I don’t think anything can beat the beauty of the animated film!) These pocket princesses and pals, I have learned, are quite adored by little hands! I am known for putting as much detail as possible into my toys and dolls, even to the point of detailed crocheted eyes, so making something so small, with only the minimum details for recognizably, is new and imaginative for me, and my kids love them! They are great for travel, would make great key chains for older “children,” 😉 or zipper clips for backpacks. The possibilities are endless! Add them to your little one’s Easter basket and be amazed at how quickly they recognize them. They are simple, and soft action figures great for creative play and cuddles. I hope you enjoy the pattern! And the movie!

Now you can also find the Beast Pocket Pal HERE!

Notes: Know how to crochet in rnds. These patterns are worked from the head down, with no joining. Use a st marker as you work to mark the beginning of each rnd. Color changes can be made, by pulling next color through the 2 loops to finish off the previous stitch. As a free pattern, this pattern has not been tested, but is accurate to the best of my abilities. Please let me know if you find any errors!

Rnd 3: (inc, sc in next st) 6x; 18 sts

Picture

1. When changing colors, pull the next color through the two loops to end the previous st.

2. After pulling through the next color, proceed with the next st with your new color.
Rnd 6-9: sc in each st around; 18 sts
Attach Daffodil. Carry Beige with you, under your stitches for rnd 10 only. We will be doing some color changes. When changing colors, pull the next color through to finish previous st, as pictured above. Carry whichever color you’re not currently using along under your sts, unless told to fasten off.
Rnd 10: dc bobble, sc in Daffodil in next st, sc in next 5 sts in Beige, sc in Daffodil in next st, dc bobble in daffodil, sc in remaining 9 sts in Beige; 18 sts

3. Switch to Daffodil at the end of rnd 9.

5. Pull up a loop, yarn over, and pull through the first two loops, pictured.

7. Pull up a loop, yarn over and pull through first two loops, leaving 3 loops on hook, as pictured.

9. At the end of the second dc bobble of rnd 10, you will pull Beige through the 4 loops to change colors.

4. Prepare for the dc bobble to create the arm.

6. With two loops left on hook, yarn over and insert into same st.

8. Yarn over, insert into same st. Pull up a loop, yarn over and pull through first two loops, leaving 4 loops on hook, as pictured.

10. After completing the second dc bobble, continue with Beige, but carry Daffodil around under the sts to use for rnd 11.
Fasten off Beige, and continue working only in Daffodil.
Rnd 11: sc in each st around; 18 sts
Rnd 12: (inc, sc in next 2 sts) 6x; 24 sts
Rnd 13: FLO through this rnd, (dc bobble, sc in next 2 sts) 8x; 24 sts

Stop here, before closing. Here, we will be using some black to sew on for the eyes (pictured), and that long tail you left for Chocolate, for sewing on her bangs. (pictured)

1. For the eyes, a full strand of yarn is too thick, and thread is too thin, so I cut about an 8 inch piece of yarn, and then gently split the strands from it in half.

3. Place your eyes 2 rnds down from the hair line.

5. Work two lashes in off the outside of each eye.

7. Using the fastened off end of the hair, pull it through the body above and between the eyes to start the bangs.

9. There is the upside down V. Now go over it about 4 more times.

2. Here are the two strands of yarn, pulled apart. Use one of these for the eyes and save the other one for another pocket princess. 🙂

4. Work your eye once over one stitch.

6. Once eyes are complete, knot the black yarn tightly inside the body.

8. Insert hook back into the hair, above the eye, and back down beside the eye, in an upside down V formation.

10. Once you get back to the starting spot of the bangs, turn and do the same thing on the other side, above the other eye.

11. Finished bangs.

12. Sew bun onto the top back of the head. (Instructions for bun below).
Bun, Chocolate
Begin with magic ring.
Rnd 1: 6 sc in magic ring; 6 sts
Rnd 2: (inc, sc in next st) 3x; 9 sts
Rnd 3: sc in each st around; 9 sts
Fasten off, and sew to the top of the head, toward the back.

13. Finish sewing bun, and knot off inside the body.
Hair, Chocolate
Ch 14
Place a st marker in the 8th ch made.
Row 1: turn and sl st in the first ch, 2 sc in next ch, hdc in each of the next 2 chs, dc in next ch, sk the marked ch, and sl st into the next ch; 7 sts
Row 2: ch 1 and turn to work in the sts just made, sk the sl st, sc in next 4 sts, sl st in last st; 5 sts
Row 3: ch 1 and turn, sk the sl st, 2 sc in next st, hdc in each of the next 2 sts, dc in last st, sl st in the next 2 chs of the original ch 8 made; 7 sts
Row 4: ch 1 and turn, sk the 2 sl sts, sc in each of the next 3 sts, sl st in next st; 4 sts
Row 5: ch 1 and turn, sk sl st, sc in next st, 2 hdc in next st, dc in next st, sl st in next 2 chs of the original ch 8 made; 6 sts
Row 6: ch 1 and turn, sk the 2 sl sts, sc in each of the next 2 sts, sl st in next st; 3 sts
Row 7: ch 1 and turn, sk sl st, 2 sc in next st, 2 hdc in next st, sl st in next ch from original ch 8 made; 5 sts
Row 8: ch 1 and turn, sk sl st, sc in each of the next 2 sts, sl st in next st; 3 sts
Row 9: ch 1 and turn, sk sl st, sl st in next st, (sc, hdc) together in next st, sl st in the final ch of the original ch 8 made; 4 sts
Now, sew the hair to the back of the head, along the ch 8, so that the longest point sort of lands to one side.

1. Of the ch 14, the first ch 8 will be the hair line that all the hair will be attached to.

3. Sl st into the ch at the end of row 1.

5. This is the end of row 5, looking at the right side.

2. This will be the longest point of the hair. Rows will be working on this part and just attaching to the ch with sl sts.

4. This is the end of row 3. Don’t skip any of the chs here. Just sl st into the next 2 unworked chs.

6. I didn’t sew around all of the hair; just the top and partly down the sides for security.

The last thing to do before closing up the body, is just sew some yellow yarn (Daffodil to match the dress), around the bun. I weaved mine around about 3 times. After tying off all the loose ends, inside the body, and stuffing them up, I didn’t even need to stuff the doll much, and just used some yarn scraps I had lying around. These little pocket pals are great for recycling yarn scraps!

Just sew the yellow a few times around the bun.

Knot off inside the body.
To close now, we will be picking up the Daffodil we dropped back at rnd 13.
Rnd 14: work through the unworked back loops of rnd 12, (dec, sc in next st) 8x; 16 sts
Rnd 15: dec 8x; 8 sts Fasten off, and sew closed by weaving your loose end through the last rnd of sts and pulling tight. Knot off and weave in loose end.

Work rnd 14 through the unworked loops seen here in this picture. This will close up just shorter than the dress, so that the dress will have some length.

Palm sized princess!
Curious about that super awesome stitch marker I used with this pattern? Check out Harper Baby Shop on Etsy and Facebook for fun crochet hooks and stitch markers! I have two of her hooks, and they’re fantastic!
