It has been a couple years since I have released a new Puffy Stuffy pattern! I think the last one might have been the Puffy Stuffy Unicorn! In honor of International Sloth Day, I have created this Puffy Stuffy Sloth as a FREE pattern for your enjoyment. Let me tell you, my 6-year-old daughter has already been having big fun with my first attempt at this pattern, and now she wants one in every color!

I have joined the #slothdaycolab2021, for the second year in a row. Check out their hashtag on Instagram for so many creative sloth makes, from cookies to clay to yarn, and so much more! I am one of the collaborators from around the globe who are helping raise awareness for these furry endagnered friends through Sloth Conservation. If you’d like to donate to the cause, you can donate HERE, and all money will go directly to the conservation of sloths and their habitats!

Materials:

Bernat Blanket Yarns in colors of your choice

  1. Main color, for the body and arms (A) approximately 52 yds
  2. For the eyes (B) approximately 8 yds
  3. Black for the claws

For the sparkly, multicolored sloth I used Bernat Blanket Sparkle held together with Red Heart Retro Stripes. I LOVE how this one turned out! With both yarns together you could even go up to an L hook size for a bigger Puffy Stuffy!

Small amount of worsted weight yarn in black for the eyes and nose.

Notes:

The Puffy Stuffy Sloth Pattern is worked in a round from the top, down, with no joining. Use a st marker to mark each rnd. The body, and legs (bobbles) are made all in one piece. The eyes and arms are made separately and sewn on. This yarn can be tricky to work with, so here are some tips: to be sure you’re not missing any sts, always count each rnd, until you’re more comfortable. Because the yarn is so thick, the sts will be very close together, especially during the increasing rnds. Do NOT pull yarn too tightly while sewing or closing, because it can break. Pull gently.

Puffy Stuffy Sloth

Body, in A

Begin with magic ring.

Rnd 1: 6 sc in magic ring; 6 sts

Rnd 2: inc in each st around; 12 sts

Rnd 3: inc in each st around; 24 sts

Rnd 4: (inc in next st, sc in next 3 sts)6x; 30 sts

Rnd 5-14: sc in each st around; 30 sts

Rnd 15: sc in next 3 sts, dc bobble, sc in next 8 sts, dc bobble, sc in next 17 sts; 30 sts

Before you continue on to close, sew your nose over 2 sts of rnd 11 centered above the feet, with worsted black yarn. Knot off inside the body.

Begin stuffing. Body will stretch as you stuff, so stuff a little more after each rnd here before closing.

Rnd 16: (invsc2tog, sc in next 3 sts)6x; 24 sts

Rnd 17: invsc2tog 6x; 12 sts

Rnd 18: invsc2tog 6x; 6 sts

Complete stuffing, if you can put anymore through the middle.

Fasten off and weave the end around the hole to close.

Eyes in B

Ch 6, and work around the chain.

Rnd 1: sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next 3 chs, 3 sc in last ch, continue to work around that turn, by crocheting now on the underside of the ch, 5 sc to the end, do NOT join, fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing; 12 sts

With worsted weight black yarn, sew the blacks of the eyes over a few chains down the middle of the eye, from the first ch where the 3 sc are, to about the middle of the piece. Knot the black yarn in the back of the eye. Sew the eyes onto the face, slanted upward over the nose, and weave in ends.

Arms in A, make 2

Arms are worked in a rnd, around the beginning ch.

Ch 5

Rnd 1: beginning in the 2nd ch from hook, sc in all 4 chs across, continue to work around by turning to work the underside of the ch, sc in underside of all 4 chs, sc into the bottom of the original turning ch, do NOT join, but continue in rnds; 9 sts

Rnds 2-8: sc in each st around; 9 sts

Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing. Before sewing the arms onto the body, attach the claws.

Claws in Black

Attach black to the right side of the beginning ch of the arm with a sl st, (ch 3, sl st in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next ch, sl st into next space on the bottom of the arm)3x; 3 claws

Knot and pull ends through to the inside of the arm. Be sure to knot them INSIDE the arm as well, so that they are not easily snagged and pulled back through!

Sew the arms at the edge of the eyes, and weave in ends. You can sew the arms so that they open, or sew them down so that they stay somewhat closed. It’s up to you!
